Whilst many of our TREE programs have been put on hold, the TREE Team have been busy ensuring that once the all clear is given we will be ready to proceed with our exciting, hands on, contextual learning experiences which have been designed to enrich learning for our KWS students.
Earlier this year, Year 10 elective Drama students participated in a whole day film incursion workshop with local videographer Jim Gowing of AWE Vision. The day involved students learning about the art of film making, who and what is involved in film making, and how to effectively plan, shoot, cut and edit footage. Students also got a chance to look at a variety of different cameras and film equipment that Jim uses the create his own works. The day culminated in the students creating their own short group devised film. These skills will assist them in the production of their own movie exploring the topic of ‘Living Regionally’ at the end of their film unit.
Pre-Kindy had their first 2020 Windermere visit last term and their excitement was contagious. Watching their concentration as they navigated a fallen tree and listening to their conversations as they tried to negotiate who was placing the next branch onto the tree fort, really highlighted the importance of the opportunities that TREE affords our students. Their imagination was in full flight, their hands were dirty, and their smiles were bright. We have purchased some simple gardening tools and other resources which will allow the P-K’s to interact and further explore the environment on their next visit.
On our return to school students some our Agriculture and Year 10 Science students will be involved in our first genetic breeding program. This long standing idea has come to fruition as a result of a generous donation of 50 ewes. This program will allow the students to investigate genotype and phenotype, dominant and recessive genes. Apart from being an essential component of the studies across both Stage 5 & 6 Agriculture it ties in with Year 10 Science where they have a unit on genetics. Year 10 Science can be difficult for some students to grasp so this will provide an ideal opportunity for students to explore genetics in a real-world sense.
It is hoped that the 2020 TREE Internship Program will be able to go ahead next term and we are working on ensuring that our Year 10 students will still be able to experience the full breadth of the industry experience. Some of our industry partners are unable to participate this year so we are currently on the search for alternative placements for our students. If you think you may be able to host an intern or know someone who might, we would love to hear from you. Year 10 students will learn more about the program and the application process in the coming weeks.
