Sport Captain

With the cancellation of the Cross Country and Athletics inter-house carnivals we had a dilemma!  How were we going to award a winner for the Jubilee Cup?

This year we are having to shake it up and do things a little differently.  The Sports Department and the House Captains have teamed up to run a variety of competitions that will occur during lunch breaks over the next few weeks.  We have lots of fun activities planned for the students, starting with nerf gun battles, dodgeball, Uno competition, handball, and sprint races.  Points are being awarded for participation as well as winning or losing so, before Term 2 concludes, we’ll have our Jubilee Cup winner.

Our newly formed inter-house competitions commenced yesterday with the Nerf Gun Battle.  The goal was to be the last house standing.  It was great to see the girls not only participating in the event, but that those who weren’t able to participate came to support and cheer on their house.  The result from the battle has Reiti on top, closely followed by Belle Prairie, then Spoleto, Villa Spada, Greccio, and finally Perugia.  With the Uno competition and the first round of dodgeball all happening later this week, we’re sure to see things heat up quickly.

Although our opportunities for sport may be limited at the moment, it’s important to continue to create opportunities to foster teamwork, although at the moment it’s with a little creativity.  Teamwork is an opportunity to blend complementary strengths, build trust, and develop conflict resolution skills, and it promotes ownership and responsibility.  These inter-house competitions are a fun way for us all to connect with our teams and each other - to unite together as houses and as a college, and to build the Mount Alvernia spirit throughout the College.  We do this by supporting each other, participating in the events, and simply by cheering on our houses.

I encourage everyone to rise to the challenge, to participate, and have some fun.  I’m excited to see how this all plays out, but one thing is certain: the Mount Alvernia spirit is alive and well.

Good luck to all, and may the best team win!
