WELCOME TO TWO NEW STAFF MEMBERS AT COLLINGWOOD

Hassen Mohamed-Saeed and Hussein Ibrahim have recently joined us at Collingwood as our new Community Liaison team. They will be working as part of the Wellbeing Team and as a support for students’ learning in a range of different classrooms across the school.

Hussein and Hassen have been employed as part of the Education Department’s Place Based Partnership’s initiative.

Special grants have been provided to a number of Victorian schools in order to support the inclusion of students and families who speak languages other than English at home or who have arrived in Australia as refugees.

The program is designed to provide parents, families and students with stronger connections with schools and post school pathways through educational and social activities, community networks and the creation of links with other community organisations.

At Collingwood we have already experienced great benefits from the work of Hussein and Hassen as they get to know the staff, students and their families and wider community.  Between them Hassen and Hussein speak a number of different languages and this has already helped with all our communication with families and community members who have mostly come from African backgrounds. Hussein and Hussen also have a wide range of experiences in different careers and as significant contributors to their communities. They have been involved in supporting students from many different backgrounds and their welcoming presence for all our students when they returned from Remote Learning was very exciting. Students will be getting to know both Hussein and Hassen much better in term 3,  through their involvement in classroom and excursion activities as well as whole school special events.

In the future Hassen and Hussein will be organising a number of community/school events for parents and families. They want to set up regular meetings and information sessions for parents from culturally diverse backgrounds. These meetings may be focussed on the Compass updates, wellbeing initiatives as well as academic pathways, career paths, subject choices, camps excursions or important cultural events. There will be interpreters available for those who speak languages other than Somali, Arabic and Tigre.

Hassen and Hussein will be consulting parents and families about other issues they would like addressed through these meetings as well.

Please look out for them and introduce yourselves. They are very keen to get to know as many of our students and staff as possible as we go into the second semester of 2020.

SCHOOL REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL (SRC) REPORT to SCHOOL COUNCIL for JUNE

PYJAMA DAY
PYJAMA DAY

This has been one of the strangest terms we have all ever encountered. Remote Learning was certainly an unexpected occurrence, but we are all very grateful that in this day and age, both students and teachers were able to communicate and continue to study the set curriculums over the two month period of Remote Learning. Our parents and teachers did let us know that had this happened twenty years ago, we would have been harder hit as computers, mobile phones and Google Classrooms were not around at the time. As current year 12 students, under the guidance of our dedicated teachers and supportive parents, we managed to continue to steer our way through the work we had to do and were quite relieved that we were finally back to Face to Face teaching with our teachers from Monday, May 25th until now.

During that period of Isolation, Anzac Day was on the 25th of April and under normal circumstances we would have conducted School Assemblies to commemorate this very significant date, both Hibo, Liria and I  put up a special link to a PowerPoint which highlighted a visual dedication to our fallen heroes with the Last Post playing in the background.

Hibo and I were able to get together one afternoon and with the assistance of Rob Redfern, we were filmed advising our student body of safety precautions that they should be mindful of during this period of Isolation and social distancing. It was fun putting this together and we hope that the student body enjoyed our little skits on the right things to be doing. Of course, it has been hard for the SRC who by now would have been involved in a number of events such as a Talent Quest, Shave For a Cure and Crazy Hair Day, Tasters for our upcoming Year 7’s, Serving tea and coffee at the Three Way Conferences, Open day tours and showcasing of our school, Information Nights and a number of other events. But of course this was all out of everyone’s hands and we totally understand the situation at hand. But again, we do feel for all the enthusiastic SRC members who want to be as pro-active as they can to contribute to our school in any way we can.

Last week we had our first SRC Meeting for the term and the turnout was really great. The students attended, worked out what we could possibly squeeze in during the last remaining week and decided that a lot of charities really have missed out with events and fundraising, so yesterday we ran a Pyjama day where students wore pyjamas, donated a gold coin and ice cream was sold for the students to participate in this worthwhile cause. We are happy to announce that $415.00 was raised and will be sent to SIDS.

For next term we are planning a Collingwood Grades 5 and 6 Taster morning for upcoming Year 7 students which the SRC help with Morning Tea, guiding students to the various classrooms and also taking them on a short tour afterwards. We want to plan NAIDOC celebrations, conduct some ‘Black Lives Matter’ events, Perhaps  have a ‘Shave For a Cure’ fundraiser and would like to get involved with Transition events for new students.  We will also be looking at helping out with any other events that are being planned around the school.

So as you can see, we are always planning and hoping we can provide a number of hands on activities for our students. It is a shame that the year has panned out like this, but we are determined to do as well as we can with our studies and provide events and moments that this year’s SRC reps and the student body can benefit from. Today Hibo and I had a PAG (Principal’s Advisory Committee) meeting with Sam today. Great ideas for us to put in place next term.

Thank you for the ongoing support.

PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK - YEAR 12 THEATRE STUDIES

YEAR 12 THEATRE STUDIES IS PROUD to announce that their online production of 'Picnic at Hanging Rock' is now available online. Due to COVID-19 restrictions and Term 2 spent out of the theatre and behind our computer screens, we have had to adapt our performance to fit a flexible online format. We have modified our conventional theatre production to an interpretative cinematic representation of the play, that is featured on our linked website that also includes behind the scene footage and commentary of our production journey. We have included footage from our work in the Theatre over Term 1 and work created during remote learning.

We have created an online visual and audio experience in an attempt to communicate our original artistic vision and creative interpretation whilst also staying within the guidelines put forward by the adjusted Theatre Studies Study Design. Our visual experience showcases videos and monologues to emulate the audience experience desired for our original stage play. The online production draws inspiration from three main theatre styles. These styles include: ‘Theatre of Cruelty’, ‘German Expressionism’, and ‘Naturalism’. All footage, sound and music is ORIGINAL and created by students.

We hope that you enjoy the work we’ve put into it our online production during this unprecedented and unusual time in all of our lives.
