Georgie O'Brien - Victorian State Championships for Netball 2023

I was fortunate enough to be selected to represent Victoria in the U17s Netball National Championships held in Darwin. What began as a few tears and a lot of nerves before trials became one of the best weeks of my life! Before going to the Northern Territory to compete against some of the best netball players in Australia, we had around fourteen of the most intensive and productive training sessions.

I can't express enough appreciation to Tracey Brereton and AJ Ballantyne for helping me improve both my netball abilities and my mental mindset toward the sport. But in no time, all training sessions were over and the hard work was ready to be put out onto the courts. Both the under-17s and under-19s Victorian netball teams arrived at the airport on April 9 in preparation for our flights to Darwin.

On April 10, the day after we arrived, we completed our very final training session before it was time. And sure enough, it was the day of the competition. In our first game of the day, we were off to compete against Western Australia. Western Australia put up a great fight, but we fought harder and were fortunate enough to come away with our first win. Later that same day, we were up against Queensland. We gave it our all, but they were an extremely strong team, and we unfortunately lost. We proceeded to play five more games over the following three days, with Victoria placing second on the ladder alongside NSW before beginning the finals.

Then came around Saturday, the day of our semi-finals where we played against NSW, fighting for the opportunity to win a silver or gold medal. Despite the fact that we lost and things didn't work out as we had hoped, we knew we had a second chance. We then went on to compete against WA for bronze on the final day of the nationals. We all fought our hardest and I couldn’t be prouder of the girls, but it just wasn't enough. Sadly, we lost, and Victoria came in fourth.

Although there were many tears, I know that I wouldn't have changed a thing about the whole experience. When I think back on that week, all I can think of is the amazing and fun memories I had with the girls and coaches, the lifelong friendships and bonds that were formed, and the overall unforgettable experience.

I will forever be grateful for this opportunity!
