Out and About

Congratulations to our Chess Champions!
Schools from around South East Melbourne assembled at St. Peter’s College in Cranbourne to compete in the annual inter-school chess tournament. Six hundred matches were played over seven rounds and for much of the day Frankston High School was neck and neck with some of the best teams in the state including Nossal High School and Haileybury. Many of our students ranked within the top 20 for the first time including: Prokhor Veresov (5th), Noah Sauvola (10th), Ruslan Laishev (18th), James Campbell (19th) and Jacob Walters (20th).
Congratulations to our captains James Campbell and Noah Sauvola and to every member of the team for the incredible progress they continue to make from one tournament to the next.

Business Management Yakult Excursion
On 22 May, Frankston High School Year 12 Business Management students received a warm welcome from the Yakult team. From the beginning of the three stage tour, we learnt all the in depth processes that go into producing the widely loved fermented milk drink Yakult. We walked through the factory and saw firsthand how Yakult is designed, manufactured and produced. We were able to witness their strict quality controls and an automated production line working. We also sat through an insightful presentation on the culture and history of Yakult which has been around in Australia for over 25 years. Fortunately for us, we were able to try their newest formula whilst our tour guide shared the raw materials needed to produce Yakult. It was interesting to see the theory we were learning in class applied to an actual business. We were all impressed with their ability to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Mural at Frankston Hospital
In early May, the 2018 students who attended The Alpine School for Leadership including Alex Hayes, Lucy Philpott, Amelie Rule, Tess Rogers, Jack Westley and Matthew Debenham along with Eliza Strangward who designed the mural, set out to complete the painting at the Frankton Hospital. The mural is located in the oncology and acute care of the elderly ward.
After the long process of prepping the wall and then painting Eliza’s design, we are proud to say that it is finally finished. The painting took place over six sessions that were carried out afterschool and on weekends.
A huge thank you to all of the teachers involved including Ms Natalie D’Ambra, Ms April Hinton, Mrs Emily Vogt, Ms Andrea Carron and Ms Kate Burgess who dedicated their time and weekends to assist us with this project. The mural would not be what it is without all the guidance and support from our wonderful art teachers.
Another big thank you to the Associate Nurse Manager, Sarah Smith, who helped organise the mural and made it all possible. She was glad to report back that “people love the beach scene and see something new in it every day”. She also mentioned that one of the visitors told her that “the mural gives her hope and brightness to an otherwise difficult day”.
While it’s sad to reach the end of the project, it’s great to see the finished product and have it shown off to everyone at the hospital.
