A bit of Magic in the Hothouse

BEFORE we get started on Canons Sport for Term 2, check out this picture of our Director of Sport, Mr Godfrey, captain of the Rockingham Flames, and SNC's Aboriginal Teaching Assistant Mr Walley-Stack, of Mandurah Magic fame. The College colleagues found themselves on the same basketball court at the Flames' 'Hothouse'  last weekend, competing for the Coast FM Cup - a huge spectacle that drew a couple of thousand basketball fans. Mr Godrey's team won the trophy but both took home great memories.

MATCH REPORTS

SNC v Clontarf @ Queens Park Reserve

AS told to this reporter {Ms Silva} because I was unable to be there. Exciting start to the game with some ‘to and fro’ of the ball, no scores. Then five minutes in, a strong tackle by Ben Retallack stopped Clontarf’s forward motion but resulted in a fractured finger for Ben. One man down. In this game this was a critical event as SNC had a severe lack of numbers - only 15 took to the field. This meant that Clontarf had reserves to spare, and they could run! Goals were scored by Zach Hale and Kaleb Bransby

Sports Captain Jack Mills said it was a good effort by the boys and he was happy to see the students who came down to support the team and the parents who always make the effort to be there. Final score: SNC 5.2 (32) Clontarf 6.15 (51) Best on Ground (BOG) Tanaka Machiri; honourable mentions Tyler Madigan and Jack Mills.

SNC v Thornlie SHS @ Walter Padbury Reserve

A strongly contested game, that was played hard and with great sportsmanship. Kicking into the wind in the first half the SNC boys found it hard to move the ball up the field while Thornlie kicks travelled for miles.

Tyson Shepard was strong in defence and contested the ball at every opportunity and laid some great tackles. Noah Hewitt got a hand to the ball right on the line to stop goals a couple of times. At half time it was Thornlie up by 2 points. And then the wind died off, so the second half gave SNC no advantage. It was a hard slog, with strong tackling from both sides. Brayden Catalano continued to put pressure on Thornlie down the wings, with gutsy tackles, and getting hands on the ball time after time. Tyler Madigan showed fabulous ball control and constantly cleared the ball from the Thornlie end. Travis Williams was in the thick of it for both halves, and displayed his flying skills with a great mark in the 2nd half. The Backs were the hardest workers of the day fighting off attack after attack from Thornlie. We had our share of goals too, one each to Noah Hewitt, Dylan Lamb and Hayden Price and 2 goals to Kaleb Bransby. Hats off and big thanks to the teacher from Thornlie who stepped up and volunteered, then provided some of the fairest umpiring we’ve ever seen. It was a nail-biting finish as SNC took the lead with a minute five on the clock. Final score: SNC 5/1 (31) Thornlie 4/6 (30). BOG Brayden Catalano, honourable mentions Noah Hewitt, Dylan Lamb and Travis Williams

Basketball

IT has been a very exciting and thrilling time for the Specialised Basketball Program. In a first for St Norbert College, four of our Specialised Basketball Teams made it through to the quarter finals of the ACC Basketball Competition.

While our Junior Boys and Senior Girls teams unfortunately suffered losses in their quarter-final matchups, we are incredibly proud of their hard work and dedication throughout the season. Notably, the Senior Girls team was composed of Year 9 and 10 students, showcasing their potential for future success.

On the other hand, our Senior Boys and Junior Girls teams gave an outstanding performance and secured their spots in the semi-finals. The Senior Boys triumphed over All Saints College, earning their spot at Bendat Stadium on Tuesday, 16 May, at 2:30 pm. The Junior Girls dominated their match against Helena College will also compete in the semi-finals, to be held at Bendat Stadium on Thursday, May, at 2:15 pm.

We would like to extend our congratulations to all of our teams and wish the best of luck to our Senior Boys and Junior Girls in the upcoming semi-finals. We hope to see our dedicated supporters at the games, cheering on our talented players!
