VERMONT HOUSE CROSS COUNTRY

Thanks to all staff and students for their patience and participation in the house cross country event. Due to the weather all events were cancelled except the year 7 event. Students who wish to compete at division are encouraged to complete the sign up form that has been sent out in year level channels on Teams. If students are struggling to access this then they can go to the sports office and chat with Ms Malander directly to express interest or send a message via Teams.

YEAR 8 ROUND ROBIN

TENNIS BOYS/MIXED/GIRLS

The Year 8 tennis team are to be commended on their recent efforts at the division tennis tournament on Tuesday the 21st of March. Vermont came up against some schools with some talented players, especially against both Mount Waverley and Glen Waverley. Our girls' team should be commended on their efforts, managing to win sets each match, and drawing in the amount of sets against Highvale (only losing by two games). Shout out to Hana T who won two of her singles matches and helped lead the team as the highest ranked player. The boys had a tougher day, but there were some great individual efforts. Most importantly, we all enjoyed ourselves and all Year 8’s got test their tennis abilities against some talented players! By Mr Calwell

BOYS/MIXED BASEBALL

Two weeks ago a very keen yr 8 group of boys collected on the oval at Vermont to have go at Baseball for the first time. Together with Mr. Malpelli and Caelan S. The boys quickly learnt some new skills and had some fun catching and pitching a baseball.

On match day along with a few nerves, we faced, Glen Waverley, Highvale and Mount Waverley. Thanks to Caelan’s side- line coaching and patience and the yr. 8 boys courage we won the first two matches. Unfortunately Mount Waverley hid their best weapon – a fabulous pitcher who was just too fast and skilled for our beginning team. We did not win this competition but we won overall because all boys had a great time, enjoyed being with friends and learnt some new skills

in sport. Two boys have decided to give baseball a go in a weekend team this year because of their experiences on the day. Thanks to Caelan S for his help and support on the day.

Well done yr. 8 baseball team. I am proud of your efforts and the way you represented Vermont Secondary College.

GIRLS SOFTBALL

On Tuesday March 21, the Vermont SC softball team began their State title defence at our District competition at Napier Park.

The team had two games where they accounted for the opposition, Mount Waverley SC (27-11) and Highvale SC (33 – 3) relatively comfortably. The improvement in the girl’ batting was fabulous, particularly compared to the beginning of Year 7. They showed just the right balance of discipline and aggression.

The third game against Glen Waverley SC became the final for the competition as both teams were undefeated. After an extremely tight first innings we were down 4-3 as one of Glen Waverley’s experienced players hit in four runs with a terrific start to their game. Fortunately, we were able to turn the game around with two strong batting innings and tight defensive fielding innings. The final result of 15-7 places the girls in the Eastern Regional competition in term 4.

The team all wore black arm bands as a mark of respect to Emily who played with us last year.

Congratulations to Olivia M, Amber S, Rhea M, Gemma J, Naz E, Lexi A, Steph O, Zoe M, Lily K, Charlotte Y, Melissa C and a huge thank you to Maddie Weller for helping coach and convene the competition.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

The girls were excited by the opportunity to show off their newly trained skills of setting, digging, spiking and serving. The matches played were of high quality with lots of intense rallies, great serves and hustle around the court. We played 3 games in total, with each game improving our decision making skills and execution. The girls had a wonderful day overall even though they only won 1 game. They learnt lots and will be in great shape for next year. Thanks to our Deakin Student Teachers for their expert coaching and support on the day. By Mr Gillespie

BOYS/MIXED CRICKET

It was a tough day out for the boys' cricket team, with one loss and one win for the day. Our first game we won the toss and chose to bat first. In our 15 overs, we finished with 5/73. With our strong bowling attack, we thought this score was defendable, however in just 8 overs, the game was lost to Glen Waverley who managed to chase down our 73 runs, finishing with 1/74. In our second game with nothing to lose, we came away with the win in what was a far better cricketing performance by the whole team compared to our first game. It was still a great day out for everyone, and all members of the team played their role throughout both games. By Mr Leithhead
