Year 10 Commerce –

Debating the indigenous voice to parliament

In Year 10 Commerce (10COM03), we decided as a class to undergo a debate on the topic of indigenous rights and ‘The Voice’. This was very  helpful in improving the class’ knowledge on aboriginal history and why gaining a ‘voice’ would be important for their culture and lives.

The class looked at why we think it is important, as well as accepting and understanding the opposing opinions. We then got randomly placed into four different political parties, Labor (For), Liberal (Against), and then the Greens and the Independents who acted in a ‘judge’ sort of role. The debate was run smoothly with both Labor and Liberal candidates stating their opinions on the matter at hand.

By Luka C (Labor Party Leader)

I found our class debate very informative and interesting, as different perspectives were cast across the room, this helped us gain understanding from all 3 sides of the debate. These two main sides being the Labor and Liberal party, and a third party involved, being the Greens and Independent parties. The Greens and Independents had to be convinced by either the ALP or Opposition. Although I was debating against the voice, I am all for having an Indigenous Voice to parliament. Having these people influence our country’s views and laws means more people being satisfied with crucial decisions made by the government. Oliver W (Liberal Party Leader)

VCE Vocational Major –

Work Related Skills

The VCE Vocational Major (VM) is being implemented for the first time at VSC this year. VM is a vocational and applied learning program within the VCE. Applied learning incorporates the teaching of skills and knowledge in the context of ‘real life’ experiences.

We have had a busy term in Work Related Skills visiting a local network careers expo, a presentation on youth rights by the Young Workers Centre, an excursion to Healesville Sanctuary and finally a day out at the Formula 1 Grand Prix. Several of the VM students have shared their experiences below.

The Year 11 VM class had an amazing time at the Albert Park Grand Prix last Thursday. This was an exciting opportunity for students to witness firsthand one of the world's most prestigious motorsports events.

The day began with an early start, as students arrived at Southern-Cross Station at the crack of dawn to board the tram that went straight there. After a quick roll call, we set off for the Albert Park Circuit. The excitement was palpable as students discussed what they wanted to do at the Tech hub, plus the various racing teams they were looking forward to seeing, as well as the impressive engineering feats of the vehicles themselves.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the roar of engines and the smell of fuel. The atmosphere was electric as we explored the paddock and tech hub, getting up close and personal with the cars and the teams behind them. The army was there as well they had tanks, and APC’s, they even had a six wheel G wagon show car. It was fascinating to see the meticulous preparation that goes into a Grand Prix event, from the precision mechanics to the detailed strategies of the racing teams.

As the day went on, we had the opportunity to watch some thrilling races, including the support categories and practice sessions for the main event, the Porsche Carrera cup, and the mighty V8 supercars! All take to the track. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the historic race where there were many older f1 cars and older le man cars from the 40s and 50s, there were old Ferraris and other classic race cars, pushing their cars to the limit and thrilling the crowds with their roaring engines.

Overall, it was an unforgettable day for the Year 11 VM class. Not only was it a chance to witness a world-class sporting event and Australia’s largest annual popup event, but it was also an opportunity to learn about the cutting-edge technology and engineering that goes into making it all possible. We're grateful to our teachers for organizing such a memorable excursion, and we're already looking forward to next year's Grand Prix!

Archie Napier - Year 11

I enjoyed going to Healesville Sanctuary because I liked seeing all the zoo animals. My highlights at Healesville were going to the bird show, seeing the birds fly over my head and seeing the platypus swimming. I was amazed when talking to a volunteer that she was a hairdresser before she started volunteering at Healesville. The only thing that I didn't like was that it was raining for about half the day!
