Fieldwork

Year 11 Geography and Outdoor Education recently went field trip to Kinglake, where we collected data and heard from fire practitioners (Parks Vic, Forest Fire Management Vic and the CFA) on bushfire preparedness in the region.

AFL

Intermediate Girls

Although the team won't proceed to the next round, we are very proud of how they played, and their enthusiasm and skill, especially as we had such a run of late outs!

Junior Girls

Well done team! The girls had a decisive win and are now through to the regionals in July.

54-0 vs Pascoe Vale Girls

Goal Scorers:

Intermediate Boys

We went out to AFL with the intermediate boys football. We won all three of our games, against Glenroy, AIA and Ilim college, which is really exciting. Might that even be a record for an AFL team at the school to have won all 3 games at the first stage? The boys represented our school extremely well and will now go through to the Metro regionals in July.

Basketball

Well done to our Senior Boys who recently took out the Moreland Division title in 4 straight games, now it's on to regionals.

IDAHOBIT

On Wednesday May 17th CHS celebrated IDAHOBIT - The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. The students of Stand Out organised a casual clothes day with the theme 'express yourself'. They also held bake sale and face painting during recess and lunch. A fabulous day of pride and celebration was had by all!

Library

Welcome to a new edition of the Library News, and what a month it has been. The library had its biggest ever trivia quest in the history of its existence. So, what book theme could possibly bring in sixty five rabid students with a dose of obsession? Well, Harry Potter of course! There were riddles and puzzles to solve, questions to answer and visual clues to organise before we found the winners. Students had the choice to enter solo or in teams of up to four players. What an absolute wonderful chaos in the library and from what we could see, everyone had an absolute blast. But there could only be one solo winner and one team winner. Our solo winner was David M from year 11 and our team winner was The Hoggy Warts consisting of Keeley T, Ruby G, Irene A-P and Layla H. Congratulations to all of you. David won himself a Dymocks book voucher and The Hoggy Warts each won a very special Hogwarts badge. Here are our winners and a couple of awesome props from the day.

One last thing, the CHS Reads Big Book Sale is coming………….stay tuned for more.

Debating

Congratulations to Henry C of year 10 who gave up a Saturday recently and travelled to Monash University's Clayton's campus to participate in the Monash Asian Studies Debating Competition. Henry debated with students from Korowa Anglican Girls School and Buckley Park College in a team of 4 students, and managed to place third in teams debating in person, and fifth overall. Topics were “that Australia should support the independence of West Papua”, “that the “lying flat” movement is beneficial to China”, and “that consumers should boycott clothing made in Bangladesh”. Not only was it a great debating opportunity, Henry learnt more about our international neighbours and worked collaboratively with students from outside of the school. Congratulations!

Schools competition update

On Wednesday 3 May six different schools again gathered at CHS for round 2 of the Schools Debating Competition organised by the DAV. Our VCE team got the night off at the last minute as their opposition forfeited, but the C grade team carried on at 7pm on the affirmative side of 'That students should have to complete compulsory volunteering hours every year'. In a close debate with one point separating the teams, Ethan B, Diego S, and Henry C won against Ilim college.

Also on the affirmative side of 'That we should ban uranium mining in Australia', the D grade team of Alanna P, Hanna J-A, and Sophie F debated and won, also against Ilim College.

I'm so impressed with how everyone has been putting their all into the debates! The whole teams are working fantastically to support each other. Our next round is Wednesday 24 May in Building A from 7pm - we'd love to have you along to support the debaters! This next round is especially exciting for the VCE and C grade teams as this will be their first ever secret topics - VCE grade will have their topics released an hour before the debate, and the C grade team only know that their topic is about 'Technology & Innovation'. It's going to be a great experience!

Year 12 Pyjama Day

Last Friday, the halls of our school were transformed into a cozy wonderland as the Year 12 students came together for an epic Pyjama Day celebration. The school buzzed with excitement as students arrived dressed in a delightful array of onesies, fluffy robes, matching PJ sets, and slippers. The atmosphere was filled with warmth, laughter, and a true sense of camaraderie as everyone embraced the chance to showcase their unique sleepwear styles. The day served as a reminder that even in the midst of academic rigor, we should always make time for laughter, friendship, and a little bit of whimsy.
