Clay Target Championships 2022

Fifteen students from Trinity College recently competed at the annual South West Zone Clay Target Championship held at the Noorat Gun Club.

Over 300 students attended spread across the region from Geelong to Ballarat to Hamilton. Trinity was represented by eleven students in the 12-14 years Junior Boy Section and four students in the 15 years plus section.

The championship is 20 targets shot Single Barrel in two visits to the range (10+10). The top three students in each age category then advance to the State Final held in Echuca on Monday 5th September.

After round one our top three shots were from Jack Skinner and Hugh Coulson on 8/10 and Jed Spence on 7/10. Five of our team shot 6/10 in this first round as well.

Round two saw some great shooting from Jesse Gill and Tim Vogel who hit 9/10 and again Hugh Coulson hit 8/10. 7/10 was scored by Jack Skinner and Jed Spence. Four of our team registered 6/10 in this round.

With a total of 16/20 Hugh Coulson placed equal first in the Junior Boy’s Section with two other shooters, meaning that Hugh went into a five target shoot off to determine the three place-getters.

This was an exciting climax to our day and Hugh was placed third overall - a mighty effort out of over 100 shooters in his age division. Euchua now beckons for Hugh as he gets the chance to show his talents on a bigger stage in the State Final.

Congratulations to all our competitors on the way they handled themselves at the shoot and the way that everyone supported each other.

Our team consisted of the following students: Jack Skinner, Lewis Holt, Tim Vogel, Toby Parker, Oliver Lockhart, Hugh Coulson, Nixon Genua, Blake Balcombe, Jesse Gill, Cooper Holt, Callum Balcombe, Archer Laurie, Jed Spence, Mitch Milne and Caleb Melville.

A big thank-you to Rob Halliday who transported the fire-arms to Noorat for our shooters.

Greater Western Soccer - Years 7 & 8

Year 8 Girls

The Year 8 Girls played Ballarat High School (BHS) in a one-off match to decide the Greater Western Region champion. BHS got off to a great start and were up 3-0 at half time. The focus for Trinity in the second half was to get on the scoreboard and great team play led to a goal from Shontae Balboni. The girls tried their best in the second half but conceded further goals to finish as runners-up. Best players for the game were Tilly Miraglia, Ava Mahoney and Shontae Balboni.

Year 7 Girls

The Year 7 Girls started well against BHS, with Luella Hutchinson scoring a goal in the first half. However two goals from BHS saw them lead 2-1 at the break. BHS controlled the second half and, despite the best efforts of Matilda Gazzard, Luella Hutchinson and Ashan Nyok in particular, finished the game 8 goals to 1.

Year 7 Boys

The Year 7 Boys team matched up well against Mt Clear College and defended bravely in the first half but were unable to create any clear cut chances until Goanar Riek scored from a tight angle just before the half time break.

That left Trinity trailing by a goal with the score 1-2. Trinity attacked with the wind in the second half and pressed for an equalizing goal, but Mt Clear’s defence held on for victory.  The second game for the Year 7 boys team saw them playing for pride against Warrnambool College. Trinity fell behind to two early goals but Goanar Riek was again on target to leave the score 1-2 at half time. Izaac Tate scored a great solo goal early in the second half but as Trinity pressed for the go-ahead goal, Warrnambool College scored from a counter attack and held on for a 3-2 win.

Year 8 Boys

The Year 8 boys have qualified for the State Finals after a thrilling finish to the competition. Trinity got off to a great start with a 3-0 win against Emmanuel College. The game was tightly contested until Hamish Darroch got behind the defensive line and scored one-on-one against the goal keeper. Hartly Ganim scored the second goal before Hamish Darroch scored again to complete the win.

A win in the second match against BHS would have secured the team’s path to the state finals. The match was again tightly contested with Trinity’s defence negating the attacking efforts of BHS, while Trinity had it’s own chances to score a goal. The match was evenly poised at 0-0 at half time. BHS continued to attack in the second half and the fine goal keeping of Levi Duynhoven helped Trinity hold on for a draw.

The competition came down to the final match between BHS and Emmanuel College. BHS won 2-0, but failed to match Trinity’s 3-0 win against Emmanuel so Trinity was declared the winner on goal difference. The team will now look forward to contesting the State Finals in September.

Thanks to Darren Balboni for his support of the teams.
