Careers

How nice is it for our students to have opportunities outside of school again Things are getting really busy on the Careers front with programs and initiatives.

Interviews for students

It is one of the best parts of my job when I get to interview students about what they would like to do when they complete their studies. I see it as a ‘launching pad’ experience where students talk to me about their aspirations, whether it be university degree, TAFE course, apprenticeship or job interview. Through this interview I support them with strategies and advice on where they are going and how to get there. From resume and cover letter support to UAC preferences, university applications and addressing criteria’s in job applications, all is a path that can be aided with navigation from a Careers Advisor.

Steps for completing your SRS application:

  1. Before you can apply for SRS, you need to apply for undergraduate admission through UAC. When you do, you’ll be issued with a UAC application number. You will then put in your preferences and pay the UAC processing fee. You can then commence your SRS application.
  2. Log in to the SRS application using your UAC application number and PIN. A series of questions and prompts will then guide you through the application process. Your application will be assessed through your Year 11 studies. Applicants in the NSW school systems: You don’t have to provide results of your Year 11 studies with your SRS application as UAC obtains them directly from the relevant educational authorities.
  3. Review your application summary.
  4. Accept the declaration
  5. Download your Confirmation of Application.

You can only submit one SRS application.

You don’t need to nominate any courses in your SRS application because it is automatically linked to your list of course preferences in your UAC application for undergraduate admission.

 Emails

I know I do send a lot of emails and students often comment that all they can see is my name when they open up their school emails. My response is always the same; please look at the subject of the email and see if it will relate you. I am sending these emails to students from all walks of life that are looking for different things and I cannot possibly email them all directly. Information is power and being informed is so important, we don’t want to let opportunities go by, so more than ever students need to check their emails.

Subject Selection

I have had the pleasure of interviewing Year10 students in reference to their subject Selection, again such a great time to get to know students and their aspirations. Year10 have lots of opportunities to access interesting programs. It is just as important to try something you thought you would be interested and find that it is not for you as it is to try it and love it. Take all opportunities that way you are exploring options and can look for potential opportunities!

At present we have:

EVET

Year10 students have been given the opportunity to partake in an EVET (External Vocational Education & Training) Course which could potentially be part of their suit of subjects in 2023. These courses are offered through different TAFEs and travel to and from venues is the students responsibility. There is a wide array of subjects ranging from Electrotechnology to Beauty. All students have been informed of this opportunity.

The Yes Program

The YES Program is a government funded initiative, run through numerous TAFE campuses. This program has given our Year 10 students numerous opportunities to investigate areas of interest; from Hair and Beauty to Trades, the courses are diverse and numerous. KKHS has over 20 students who have participated in these mini programs in Term 3. Students gain an understanding of independent learning, and with the experience they gain, it is hope they will be able to have an understanding of their future career pathways or even find out what they don’t like which is just as important.

The YES+ Program

YES+ Program: This is very much like the YES Program and offers great TAFE Taster courses to Year10 students again they are delivered at various TAFE locations and encourage an independent learning experience. Students need to be proactive with these programs. They are emailed to students and advertised in Morning Notices.

Whitecard

A white card is issued to individuals who complete general OH&S induction training. It serves as proof that workers have a basic understanding of health and safety precautions on a work site. This credential is compulsory to enter numerous industries.

Kurri Kurri High will be holding a whitecard course on the 18th of November 2022. Interested students need to see myself in the Careers Office across from the library to register for a position.

Driver Safety PCYC Program

Students have the opportunity to participate in the Safer Drivers Course for Learner Drivers. This course will be held at Kurri High during Term 4 and will be presented by PCYC facilitators.

This course is a combination of theoretical and practical components involving group sessions discussing how to manage risks on the road and includes tailored in car coaching that will address individuals learning needs.

Students participating in the Safer Driver Course will gain important road safety skills and acquire valuable instruction on driving alone, dealing with road conditions and identifying hazards as well as managing risks.

Drivers will also receive twenty hours of credit towards their compulsory logbook hours, requiring them to only complete 100 hours of supervised driving outside of this course. If students also partake in 10 hours of professional driving lessons, available through Accredited Driving Schools, they will receive a further 20 hours of credit on top of the 10 hours accrued by their Accredited Driving lessons as described in the table below.

Professional L-Plate Driver Training Credited hours Supervised driving hours Logbook total
Safer Driver Course 20hrs 100hrs 120hrs
10 hours of Accredited Driving lessons 20hrs* 100hrs 120hrs
Safer Drivers Course & 10 hours Accredited Driving lessons  40hrs 80hrs 120hrs

*This is in addition to the 10 hours spent driving during the lessons. Professional lessons more than 10 hours will not provide additional credit.

Learner drivers must have completed 50 hours of actual on-road driving experience prior to enrolment in this course.

Work Experience in Term 4

Will be up and running and it will be great to see students take on this opportunity. Students participate in this optional program with the goal of gaining experience from a diverse range of fields and with some hoping to gain apprenticeships and traineeships.

Congratulations to all students who have completed their Work Ready requirements who can now capitalize on this experience of vocational pathways during Term 4.
