Principal's Message

Mr Alan Hope

Term 3 2022 has been a very busy term and as a school we have seen many new and exciting projects start.

Our Clontarf Academy is finally up and running with our Academy Director, Clark working hard to establish the space and begin to plan some amazing experiences for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander boys. The Academy room is set up with the popular ping pong table and is just awaiting a few additional upgrades to the space. Clark has also recently been joined by Ruben who has moved from Bourke to join the Clontarf Academy at KKHS. Ruben is a Clontarf alumni, so is excited to provide all the incredible experiences that he had for the students at KKHS. Our weekly training sessions have started with close to twenty boys joining Clark and Ruben for an early morning training session, followed by breakfast, proving the boys with a great start to the day. The first of our boys camps were held in term 3 with our Stage 4 boys joining other Academies from across the Hunter region for a football gala day. Shout out to Tyrone Dries who won the KKHS Academy Top Bloke for the camp. A huge thank you Clark and Ruben for continuing to provide these amazing experiences for our boys.

We are also extremely excited that the renovations on our new hall space are very close to completion. The finishing touches are taking place and our CAPA faculty are beginning to move their equipment into the new spaces. The renovations have provided the school with two incredible new music spaces including individual practice rooms, a dance & drama studio and two additional learning spaces. The final space completed in the renovations is a new attendance office which will provide a dedicate student entrance point. This will especially support our senior students on their study periods. Our HSC music students will take full advantage of this space to perform for their Performance exams and we will hopefully have our students enjoy a concert in the space before the end of term.

As you may have seen on our social media pages, we are excited to launch our representative sport program for the many talented athletes that we have in the school. Mrs Gavenlock, HT PDHPE and Ms Sutherland, Community Liaison, have worked hard to secure sponsorship for our teams and also additional items including our game day polos and a gazebo for matches.

Our squad tryouts are happening as this newsletter is published to determine each of our squads and games and further sport experiences are being planned for our squad members. Each squad member will sign a representative sport contract and use these programs to participate in a range of extra curricular practice sessions and of course matches against other schools. We are really excited about this program and know that it will continue to evolve as we move throughout this year and into 2023.

We have also been really excited to welcome the Tomorrow Man and Tomorrow Woman workshops into the school. These important workshops were provided to all students in years 10,11 and 12. The interactive sessions discuss important issues for our senior students including mental health and positive relationships. The feedback from these sessions were extremely positive and all the students were very engaged in the sessions. As we move forward with this new partnerships with the organisations we will offer more sessions and also include some parent & carer workshops so that all our families can gain an insight into the positive sessions. Stay tuned for more information!

Finally, it is important to mention out amazing Year 12 students who are preparing for their last days as students of KKHS and working hard in preparation for the upcoming HSC exams. This year group have shown their resilience and determination throughout the past two years which have been extremely difficult with lockdowns amongst all the other challenges the HSC always brings. So far our students have completed major works, personal interest projects and performances to start the HSC in a positive mindset. The Year 12 Fun Afternoon will celebrate this amazing group of students before we farewell them at their Graduation Assembly and Formal. I will end this by saying a massive thank you to our 2022 School Captains, Sharra Puller-Gibson, Paul Jimenez and Vice-Captains Meila Connolly and Aidan Sneesby. These students have been exceptional in their roles and should be congratulated for their leadership over the past twelve months. Good luck to all students in the upcoming exams.
