E-Smart Week at SJW

Last week from the 5th to the 11th of September was National E-Smart Week. This year's theme was 'Proud to be me, digitally' and is an important week to reinforce with students the importance of being safe online lead by the Alannah and Madeline Foundation. Across the school, students participated in different activities to demonstrate how they can be wise online.

Prep & JLA

During E-Smart Week, the Prep and JLA read a book called Swoosh, Glide and Rule Number 5  exploring the need for family rules to help us to be safe online. If you'd like to read this book with your family or watch Jimmy Rees read it, please follow this link! They also explored how using screen time wisely helps sustain their body and mind.

Here are some things the students learnt!

Prep

Don’t use a device in bed because you could get sore eyes. – Jaxon

If something scary comes up on your screen, you can turn it off. – Will

Don’t use devices at dinner time because you will get sore eyes.  – Thomas

You should not be using devices in bed. – Stefania

When your parents tell you to get off your device, you must listen.  – Eleanor

JLA

Rule number 5 is no devices in bed. -  Imogen

If you take your device to bed, and you're watching something really bad, you might get anxious or scared about it and your mum and dad won't know in case they're sleeping. - Harper

If something scary pops up, you tell your your mum and dad straight away.  If you're not with your mum and dad, tell any adult straight away. - Joshua Z.

Ask one of the students to show you the dance they learnt!

MLA

The MLA students focused on their digital footprints and what online activities contributed to these. They also explained ways they can be safe online and developed a 'Tech Pledge' to describe ways they can support themselves and others.

See the slides below for more detailed examples of what the students did in class this week.

SLA

The SLA students considered what is important to keep in mind when choosing to post online. They also explored how to appropriately respond to posts online. Students needed to consider the privacy of their own accounts, who may see their posts, and do my comments relate to the post and make sense, as well as how do my comments make other people feel?

They created their own "Finstagram" posts and put what they had learnt into practice. Check them out!
