From the Principal

Dear parents and carers

Welcome to week 7

Good luck to our Tournament of Minds Teams who are competing at Adelaide High this Sunday. The students have worked for many weeks after school and on weekends, supported by Miss Burton and Mr Burness, to prepare themselves for the big event. Tournament of Minds is a problem solving program for teams of students from both primary and secondary years.

They are required to solve demanding, open-ended challenges. St Gabriel's has Teams in the following disciplines:

  • The Arts
A new discipline for those who have a love for the visual and performing arts!
The long term challenges will involve research before developing a creative interpretation in response to the Challenge. Plenty of opportunities for artistic expression in the form of dance, song, musical instruments, theatre and all forms of the Visual Arts.
  • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
The combination of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics principles provides an integrated approach for students to deepen their conceptual understanding and use their creative and critical thinking skills to solve the challenges within an authentic context.
  • Language Literature
Language Literature Challenges will involve in-depth analysis and research of texts from a variety of fields.

Tournament of Minds is an opportunity for students with a passion for learning and problem solving to demonstrate their skills and talents in an exciting, vibrant and public way.

Council has approved our Capital Development submission. This allows us to continue with the documentation and planning side of things. Hopefully we see some activity on site before the end of the year.

Please keep the date free for our annual Sports Day. It will be held in Term 4 on Friday 28th October, Week 2. We look forward to seeing the community come together and celebrate a great day.   More information next term.

It was great to see so many at our recent community events. The Book Week Parade brought the crowds onto the streets to applaud and cheer on all the characters from much loved books. The students had a wonderful time getting dressed up and the costumes were awesome. Last week's Fathers' Day breakfast was blessed with a spectacular morning for all attendees. A big thank you to the Community Group who catered and served the delicious food and drinks. It was a brilliant morning, with all in attendance most appreciative of the hospitality.

On Tuesday, students from Years 3 to 6 represented St Gabriel’s at the SACPSSA Touch Football Carnival. The sun was shining and the conditions were perfect for a great day of Touch Footy.  Our Senior boys and girls teams had a successful day winning half of their matches, whilst our Year 4 boys won the majority of their games, displaying excellent skill and team work.  Every year level competed in six matches across the day in a round-robin style format against other Catholic Schools.

I would like to commend the students for their sportsmanship and efforts on the day. Thank you to all the staff that assisted and well done to Anita Marino and Nick Hrisafinas for organising an excellent day.

Student Led Conversations notes will be going home tomorrow with the eldest child. Both you and your child will have the opportunity to meet with your child's teacher for a 15 minute learning conversation.  These meetings will take place in your child's classroom. The smooth running of our event relies on all parents keeping your schedule time.  If you require a meeting longer that 15 minutes, please contact your child's teacher to negotiate an alternate time.
