Grand Finals

Last weekend I had the pleasure of watching hockey, football and rugby to end our 2022 Winter season. Despite a chilly morning at Moorebank for the hockey grand finals our girls were certainly on a mission to prove themselves as the premier team in their division. Congratulations to Mrs Hyslop, Katerina Reynolds(Captain) and the team on their successful game against Barker College.

The 13 and First Football teams had their work cut out for them against two strong CCGS teams. Despite the final result not swinging in our favour, I would like to congratulate all the boys and Miss Stammer on their never give up attitude.

A special thank you goes out to all the parents who attended grand finals and cheered on our teams with such enthusiasm. It was certainly to see the strong BMGS spirit on the day.

To finish the day I made it to Sydney University to watch our rugby boys team up with SACS against St Patrick’s College for some grear rugby games. These were all played in good spirit and it was great to see all the boys enjoying one last game of rugby before we move onto summer sport. Many thanks to MR Grace who took on the role of MIC Rugby this year and worked hard to keep the program going.

Summer sport trials are now in progress so please ensure you watch the screens for trial dates.

Congratulations - Students' Achievements

Olivia Harris and Jessica Harris – Netball

On Monday the NSWCIS Netball carnival was held at Netball Central, Sydney Olympic Park. Two of our BMGS students were selected to represent the ISA Netball Team at the Challenge Day Vs other Independent Schools.

ISA Opens: Olivia Harris (Year 11)

ISA U15s: Jessica Harris (Year 8)

Both the ISA Opens and ISA U15s finished in 3rd place in their respective competitions! Well done, girls!

Olivia was shortlisted for the ‘possible & probables’ rounds for the NSWCIS Opens Team selection and proceeded to play further games that afternoon. However, she narrowly missed out on the final team selection to some very talented, older State and National players, some who are already in the QBE Swifts Academy.

This was a great effort for Olivia. Congratulations to both Olivia and Jessica on a great day of Netball.

Otto Passlow – Skiing

This week, Otto Passlow (Year 8) competed for BMGS this week in Division 3 Boys for the Slopestyle Ski competition, as part of the NSW/ACT/QLD State Interschools Snowsports Championships. Otto made a very strong second run and placed 6th, which qualifies him for the National Interschool Championships on 8th September. This is a first for BMGS and I would like to congratulate Otto on such an outstanding result. We wish him all the best at the National Championships.

Winter Sport Presentation Evenings

The Winter Sport presentation evenings are coming up shortly. Could you please ensure that you put the relevant dates into your calendar:

Netball – Tuesday 30th August 6:00 pm for 6:30pm start - Coote Hall

Hockey – Wednesday 31st August 6:00 pm for 6:30pm start - Coote Hall

Football – Wednesday 7th September 6:00 pm for 6:30pm start - Cuff Hall

Rugby – Thursday 8th September 6:00 pm for 6:30pm start - Coote Hall

Students are required to wear their full school uniform including blazer. Any student who is not dressed according to the school rules will not be presented on the night. I thank you for your support in this matter.

Orienteering

The Orienteering training afternoon run last Friday was again a successful afternoon thanks to the work of Mark and Vanessa Freeman.

A reminder that all students were sent the information at the start of the Term regarding the NSW All Schools Orienteering Championships. (Pease refer to earlier Newsletter). This is a self-nomination event.

ISA Athletics

The ISA Athletics Carnival will be held on Tuesday, 13th September. The BMGS team is posted on the Sports Office noticeboard. Please ensure you let me know if you are unavailable for all the events that you have qualified for.

If you do not wish to compete in all events listed please come and see me so that I can fill places.

Any students who currently participate in Triple Jump or Hurdle events through Little Athletics can come and see me at the Sports Office for further information.

If you do not own a BMGS singlet you will be required to hire one from the Uniform Shop.

Grand Final Football Results - Sat, 20th August

BMGS 13s were defeated by CCGS, 3-1 – Grand Final

This weekend the 13s played their Grand Final against Central Coast Grammar School, at the Wanderers sporting complex near Blacktown. We had only played CCGS once before this season due to the weather, and they were missing a number of their usual players, so we didn't really know much about them. We managed to get an early goal through a long-shot from Henry which slipped past the keeper and took that lead to half-time, but we weren't creating our usual volume of chances as their backline was very strong and we didn't stretch the field enough to create gaps. Unfortunately we ended up conceding three goals in the second half and finished runners-up to a slightly superior team. Ultimately, I think this experience will benefit the boys, as the occasional tough game will help them to raise their standard for future seasons. All things considered, we had a great season and I wish the boys all the best for next season. Thank you to the parents and other BMGS students who came to support and cheer on the boys!

BMGS First XI were defeated by CCGS, 4-1 – Grand Final

After an incredible undefeated season, the BMGS First XI boys' team had clinched the Minor Premiership and were through to the Grand Final against CCGS. In the last meeting with CCGS the match ended in a draw, which meant both teams had unfinished business.

The final kicked off with CCGS pressing down hard on our defence, which prompted Xavier spring into action straight from the start, winning the possession. CCGS played a heavily attacking formation but the boys adapted quickly and fired back, with both teams creating some chances on goal. The opening goal came from a very unfortunate situation; after a through ball through the defence, CCGS were pushing on goal when Jack made a great save, before the ball was then kicked out of his hands and into the goal.

The referee allowed the goal and, although the boys felt robbed by conceding such a poor goal, they didn't drop their heads and instead came back stronger. Isaac, launching the ball long from the kick off, forced an attack in CCGS’ half, with some beautiful link up play between Jett, Max and Hugh creating some chances on goal that narrowly missed. The second goal came from a lucky ball through the middle and from right in front, CCGS snatched their second.

The first half finished with BMGS down 2-0, with the BMGS boys feeling dissatisfied with the score line but determined not to let it affect their game.

We started the second half with our normal kick off routine, which saw BMGS press hard and attack the CCGS half. Isaac and Luka dominated the middle, with Will G constantly attacking the wing and creating some great chances on the right side. On the left side, Angus was getting very close to a goal with some narrow misses that were unfortunate not to go in. Jett was contributing to the attack beautifully, which some excellent passing, which was running the CCGS midfield ragged. Max was through on goal after holding up the ball and allowing space for the wingers to push up and when the ball came back to him he was brought down in the box by a challenge that should have rewarded him with a penalty, but once again the referee didn't call the foul and let the play continue. Not too long after that, Angus was also fouled in the box which, once again, should have been awarded a penalty.

Luka continued to create chances alongside Jett and Isaac in the midfield but we just couldn't get the final touch to get it in the back of the net. The game was going back and forth, with both teams attacking hard on each other's goal. Jack pulled off some brilliant saves, denying the CCGS attackers with some tough goalkeeping. In defence, Trin and Zakis were shutting down the opportunities of a cross into the box well, with Wyatt and Xavier getting the ball out from the back and into our possession. Jaxon's left foot was creating problems for the CCGS defenders with his constant long balls into the attacking half.

After being finally awarded a free kick, Isaac stepped up to take it and with a beautiful low ball underneath the wall, the CCGS defence were left scattered while our attack followed it in. Luka smashed it into the back of the net to snatch back a much deserved goal for BMGS. The score was now 2-1, and both teams were pushing to add to the score. After a hard but legal tackle in our box the referee awarded a penalty to CCGS; Jack got the direction right but it was a great spot kick which made the score 3-1.

With not long left in the match we made a couple of changes to try and get the game back into our hands. Xavier was put up front in right wing, with his normal position being a centre back, stunning us all with how well he could play in an attacking role, linking up with Max at the top of the park very well and almost getting his name on the score sheet. Jett was everywhere putting on pressure and creating chances wherever he was. Isaac and Luka still dominated the middle of the park, but with a lucky break away CCGS snapped up the opportunity on goal and scored their fourth goal.

The match ended 4-1, however, the final score does not reflect how well our BMGS boys played. We couldn’t be happier about the courage and effort these boys played with right up until the final whistle. The respect between the two teams was also great to see, with both teams congratulating each other on a very intense and tough game. We are very proud of how well the boys played and how humble they were in defeat; an incredible game for both teams. Well done to CCGS for the win and well done to our BMGS boys for such an amazing season, going undefeated up until the Final and winning the Minor Premiership is an incredible achievement.

You all deserve it and should be very proud of yourselves. Well done, boys!
