Way 2 Go Bike Ed

Way 2 Go Bike Ed

Each year the Torrens year 4 students are lucky enough to have the Way 2 Go Bike Ed crew come in and teach us about road safety education. This occurs every Friday for 5 weeks.

At the start of every lesson we tested our bikes by checking if the chain and bell was working and if there was air in our tyres. We also learned how to do a drop test. It is where you drop your bike and make sure everything is secure and doesn’t fall off. We learned how to claim your lane and be a road hog for the lane you are in at that time.

Before we started riding single file we played some games and learned the slow race technique. We also played the game dodge where you can’t talk or let your feet touch the floor. One person calls out different challenges that you have to do like put your hand on your helmet. Then we would have to do that and if you get out you have to be on the border.

We started off riding single file around the school then started to learn about our gears. In the third week we got to ride through an obstacle course to see what we have learned and  see if can be safe on the road, this included T junctions and zebra crossings. After we got confident we started moving on into signal work, where we had to remember to signal before turning corners and ride with one hand on the handle bars. Once we became confident on signals we moved onto the road and roundabouts. We also learned about how to use our brakes and power position and learning how to use your bike.

In the last week we got to the River Torrens to ride down big hills that were really steep and we had to make sure that we used our brakes to make sure that we were safe. After that we moved onto going around roundabouts.

We really enjoyed Bike Ed because some people learned how to ride a bike and some learned more about being safe on the footpath and the road. We all had a lot of fun and had a great time and an amazing experience.
