College Dux 2021

On Monday we had the opportunity to congratulate and celebrate our 2021 Dux students, Mitchell Padula and Jessica Jefferis.

Mitchell was awarded the Townsend Award.  The Townsend Award is presented to the student who receives the highest ATAR award in VCE. Jessica was awarded the Fischer Award, this award is presented to the student who is the highest achiever in VCAL.

Mitchell and Jessica spoke to our current Year 12 students about their journey in their final year of education with tips and strategies for success.

Mitchell spoke of his school experiences during primary and secondary school and provide the following tips to students doing their VCE:

Tips

Having been through VCE, and also watching countless study tips videos, I have got three tips for everyone. I honestly wish I had of followed these from the start of the year, it would have made my experience a lot easier and I probably would have gotten a higher score;

  • Get into a rhythm of study, and follow it rigorously. I remember, coming back from holidays and mid term breaks, not being able to concentrate on study for more than 3 mins. But after failing this a few times, I forced myself to do 5 mins of study. The next day 10, and then 15 and so on. Building up from struggling to study for 3 mins, to studying for hours basically every night.
  • Understand general ideas and then learn the specifics. Before doing any questions in your textbook you should grasp the ideas that you are learning. Then use the questions to cement your understanding of these ideas. And really think about the things you are learning, and discuss them with your teachers and friends. Also, try to avoid textbook tunnel vision, its easy to mindlessly do 10 maths questions by just applying a formula, and the realise you did 9 of the 10 wrong after you check the answers.
  • Have a reason for every segment of study that you do. There is no point practicing something that you are good at, when there are topics that you have trouble with. Generally, you should do what your teachers tell you, but don’t just do something you’ve been told to do if it is not useful. You study to learn, you don’t just study because you’ve been told to do textbook chapter 4A. You should be learning every time you study, if not seek help from your teachers and reconsider what you are doing.

Mitchell said "it is possible to have a mullet and get a decent ATAR and also your ATAR does not measure your success with its numerical value, rather, you can say you succeeded if your ATAR gets you to a place that you want to be".

Jessica also spoke of her school journey and how it was a challenge at times and that the transition from primary school to secondary school was a difficult one.  Jessica like many students found Year 11 and 12 particularly difficult due to the pandemic and remote learning, but found that by keeping in touch with teachers and working hard she was able to finish her VCAL journey.

Both Mitchell and Jessica thanked their teachers for all the help and assistance they provided over the years.

Congratulations to Mitchell and Jessica.  We look forward to seeing what your next chapter brings.  We are sure it will be amazing.  Well done!

VCAL News

As part of the VCAL Kitchen garden program students had the opportunity of making their own breakfast at school. The students were presented with a selection of ingredients and had to research and develop a well balanced, healthy and nutritious meal.

The Kitchen Garden group are looking forward to working in the vegetable garden and are hoping for a bumper crop of a variety of veggies throughout the seasons.

They kick started the year off with a large supply of blood plums and apricots which were turned into pots of delicious jam. These products will be available for sale once the students complete the packaging and labelling. The proceeds of the sale will help to fund further cooking and growing ventures.

The Kitchen Garden Group is always on the lookout for donations of fresh produce, so if you have a glut of tomatoes, pumpkins or any other items throughout the year we would be happy to turn them into jams, relishes and sauces.

VCAL student Liam Addison baked some delicious cookies with his Learning Support Assistant Tabitha.  Well done Liam!
