Lacrosse Victoria at Melbourne Girls’ College

Over the past 6 weeks Lacrosse Victoria have been running “Triball Lacrosse” at MGC – an introductory, fun program for beginner lacrosse players. We have been fortunate enough to secure funding that will allow us to run another free 6 week program in Term 4 for MGC students on THURSDAYS AFTER SCHOOL from 3:30pm – 4:30pm, so if you are interested in coming along please let Ms. Carre know via email by Friday October 11th – we’d love to see you there! The Term 4 program is planned to run from October 17 – Nov 21st :)

Congratulations and Good Luck

All the best to Miriam Suares-Jury 8G and Tara Gilmartin 9A who are both representing Victoria at the Australian U15 Lacrosse Championships in South Australia over the school holidays. Congratulations to you both also for your Premierships last weekend at both U15 and U17 level for Williamstown and Footscray respectively – amazing achievement!

Annual Year 7 Dodgeball Competition

In Wellbeing classes this term the Sports Captains have run the annual Year 7 Dodgeball Competition. It is a wonderful reflection of students leading students.

It is run during the first 20 minutes of Wellbeing classes on a Monday, reiterating the idea of physical activity, fun and making connections with others; these are the things that are part of our curriculum but also part of our practice.

Congratulations to 7 Lyons 2 for winning The MGC 2019 Dodgeball Competition.

And thanks to the Sports Captains who lead the competition being such great role models for the Year 7s.

Sport Report

It has been a while since I have written anything into the newsletter and it is incredible that we find ourselves at the end of term 3 already. Our very talented students have achieved many incredible things over the past few things, so please take the time to have a read of everything sport related in this newsletter.

Year 8 Sport Day

Over 80 Year 8’s represented MGC in Table Tennis and Basketball matches against the schools from the Inner North Division. Our table tennis team lost the final to University High School while the Basketball A team were undefeated for the day and won the right to represent our division at the Regional Finals next term. The feedback from all staff on the day was that behavior and sportspersonship were impeccable and the students should be commended for the way they represented the school throughout the day.

Regional Athletics

See Tom Bond’s report on how our athletics team fared at the Northern Metropolitan Regional Championships.

Senior Netball

Tonia Douglas-Scarfe took our Senior Netball team to MGC’s first State Final for 2019. Our students competed extremely well but fell short of qualifying for the semi-finals winning 1 game and losing 2. The quality of opposition was extremely high and our students pushed them to their absolute limits only to come up short twice. Congratulations to the students involved for making the commitment in a very busy Term 3 schedule to represent the school.

Swimming - Victoria Short Course Championships

Being ever so humble, none of our talented swimmers let me know about their results at the recent state short-course championships. MGC had a total of 9 students competing, with the majority of them swimming fast enough for a place in the final. What was even more incredible is that all our swimmers swam in a total of 4-8 events over the course of the weekend which can explain why they might have been feeling quite tired at school for the next week. Competing students were: Manon Shaw, Charlie Millard, Chloe Millard, Ailish Walsh, Chloe Mitchell, Natasha Lowe, Ciara Walsh, Chantelle Campbell and Dominique Quirk. Year 12 student Dominique made the final in the 200m Breaststroke and finished with a bronze medal.

Year 7 Sport

As I am typing this, our year 7’s are eagerly awaiting their Sport Day for Term 3. Competing in Basketball, Hockey and Table Tennis, over 120 students will take part in what promises to be a busy and fun filled day.

Term 4

We are looking forward to many exciting sporting events in term 4. State Finals for Track and Field as well as Regional finals for Basketball, Hockey, Cricket and Volleyball are only some of the events on the calendar.

MGC is also hosting the State Indoor Rowing Championships on October 11th which continues to raise the profile of our school in the world of SSV Sport.

MGC Athletics Team – Regional Finals

On Wednesday September 4th, forty students represented MGC in the Northern Metropolitan Region Track & Field Championship, held at Meadowglen International Athletics Stadium. The team had a very successful day, with nine events awarded first place, seven in second, eleven coming in third and thirteen other places. A special mention goes to the under 12-13 4x100 relay team (Charlotte Robb, Alina Ivanova, Roxy Maslin and Keira Lindemans) who managed to set a new region record, breaking a record previously set in 1969. Overall, the MGC athletics team achieved 5th position out of 48 secondary schools in the region. The progressing students will compete in the SSV State Track & Field Championships on October 18.
