Top Screen

On Thursday 7 March our principal Sue Harrap and I celebrated the premiere of Top Screen 2019, the annual celebration of the top fourteen VCE Media films created in 2018 as part of VCAA’s ‘Season of Excellence.’

Our keynote speech from Claudia Sangiorgi Dalimore, award winning documentary and music video director, reiterated the stress and significant work any creative pursuit needs to be successful with a timely reminder that the art and the audience should be front and center at all times. She also spoke well about the value of self reflection in improving oneself and knowing that success isn’t achieved via perfection, but in fact through persistence and not being afraid to try something. A lesson that is relevant beyond the media classroom.

Oliver Crawford-Smith and Yianni Rowlands were treated to a red carpet welcome along with the twelve other students and perhaps most importantly a free choc-top for in the screening. The enthusiasm for their craft amongst all filmmakers was reflected in the quality of the work on display with a range of genres to be seen.

Oliver Crawford-Smith has gone on to work freelance in the industry and so far since year 12 has completed a short film, is currently producing a documentary and is in pre-production on his second feature length film.

Yianni Rowlands has gone on to university, studying film at the Victorian College of the Arts and is currently producing a music video due for release in the middle of the year.

Congratulations to you both; you have done us all proud!
