Year 10 Careers Workshops

Our Year 10 students participated in their annual Careers Day last Tuesday. The event began with our very own Xanthe Gunner (NHS2014, now working in the GCC sub school office) hosting a panel of four returned NHS students, each of whom had a very interesting story to tell. Although quite recently graduated, they have already had very different experiences of travel, the workforce and post-secondary schooling. All of them have already changed direction at least once, and each of them spoke of the value of recognising and embracing opportunities that led to what is often referred to as “good luck” later down the track. In fact, “a lucky break” rarely occurs in isolation. More often, it results from a deliberate act, even though the connection may not be obvious until much later. Examples include learning a new skill, being brave enough to reach out to a connection, or following an interesting lead. These four young people are also living examples of the fact that skills learnt in one context can always be used again in other areas of life.

After lunch, students broke into smaller groups to participate in three sessions led by guest speakers from a wide variety of career areas. They all spoke about their own career journeys and offered tips on how they have made career decisions.

This year, almost all of our guests were parents and all of them were from the local community. It was the first time in the five-year history of this event that we have had so many speakers available. This gave students an unprecedented opportunity to hear from people whose opinions they really value. We hope more parents will join us for future events like this, as our presenters all seemed to gain as much from the day as their audiences. Many new and interesting conversations were started today, and all of them will lead to better outcomes for our young people.

Super Opportunities for Design/Folio students

Ready Set Design @RMIT

Now in its eighth year, Ready Set Design is a series of three events for students in Year 11 and 12 where they can learn about design careers and tertiary education programs in design, develop their folio, and gain knowledge and insight into the selection interview process and folio presentation skills.

Workshops are held in the April, July and September school holidays. We recommend that students attend all three sessions to get the most out of Ready Set Design.

Registrations are now open for Workshop 1 (Design Bytes), which will be held on Thursday 11 April 2019. Registrations for Workshops 2 and 3 will open later in the year, and we will advise you when students can register for these (students who register for Workshop 1 will also receive a notification).

To register their attendance, students must visit our Eventbrite page, select the session/s they wish to attend, and provide their details. Students aged under 18 years of age will also need to return a consent form signed by their parent or carer. More information about Ready Set Design can be found on the individual event page.

Facilitated by our career services department your students will meet Industry leaders at an industry networking lunch, learn about networking, and mingle with Hotel School students.

This will be an opportunity for your students to:

Observe students practicing their networking skills
Meet business leaders from the Hotel Management Industry
Socialise with fellow Year 11 & 12 students, current students of The Hotel School and senior industry leaders.

Are you considering Medicine in 2020 or 2021?

If yes, then you are invited to attend a free UCAT information session at Ivanhoe Girls Grammar school April 1st at 3.45, in their lecture theatre. The session is being run by MedEntry, an organisation run by doctors and academics that has helped students prepare for the UMAT for many years.

UMAT has been replaced by UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) for entry into most medicine and dentistry courses across Australia and New Zealand. Students who wish to enter such courses in 2020 will need to sit UCAT in 2019.

Work Experience for Year 10s

All students in Year 10 are expected to complete a work experience placement in Term 2 (May 13-17 - that’s Week 4). Each student is responsible for identifying a suitable placement, and liaising with employers to organise this. Taking ownership of this process assists young people in developing the skills and habits they will need to gain employment in later life. Holiday Activities coming up in April

Experience Clever at La Trobe University

Experience Clever gives Year 10, 11 and 12 students the chance to experience Uni for a day. Not only will students get to see the campus, but also get to take part in fun and dynamic workshops led by real lecturers. Students will choose from over 50 workshops in a broad range of study areas. From there, they will experience real classroom environments and interact with university staff and students.

There will be campus and accommodation tours, free catering, prizes and entertainment. Students are encouraged to register early before sessions fill up.

Step on Campus Holiday Event

Step on Campus gives students and their families an opportunity to take a personalised tour of Deakin University during the Term 1 school holidays. Participants will be offered a 45-minute tour with a current Deakin student to learn about Deakin’s study areas, campus life and how to make the best transition into university.

Day in the Life of a Fashion Illustrator – Holiday Workshop

This hands-on 1-day workshop is open to all Year 10 – 12 students, and aims to provide the opportunity to experience life as a fashion illustrator and to develop skills to present creative ideas for their portfolio. The workshop is designed for students interested in communicating their design concepts through fashion illustration and wanting to develop fashion portfolios. Tips for folio presentation and layout will also be discussed.
