Northcote High School Swim team at the Division Swimming Carnival
Our Year 9/10 girls won an exciting 20 over Northern Region Cricket final 5/106 to Gladstone Park 5/103. Amelie Sibilin was our best batter, retiring on 22 so all the girls would get a bat. Other standout performers were Rosie Rodger, Audrey Kennedy, Sophie Obst, Lexi Mackey, Lulu Beveridge, Riley Magee, Sophie Hargreaves and Claudia Hetherington with both the bat and ball. A special mention to Frankie O’Leary who had to leave for a dental appointment. She returned to bowl and bat in the match. Such a great group of students.
Mr. Price
On Wednesday 6 March we had 2 boys teams and 1 girls team compete in the Yr 9-12 Divisional Tennis Competition. Congratulations to our Senior Boys and our Intermediate Boys teams who won their age group. We wish them luck as they move through to the Regional Round. Thank you to Ms Gollan for selecting the teams and attending with them on Competition day.
Northcote High School hosted the Division Swimming Carnival which was held at the Northcote Aquatic Centre on March 7. With a team of 35 students, we were by far the school with the most competitors. The weather really turned it on for us, with beautiful sunshine and perfect temperatures. Well done to all who competed, many of our students qualified to move through to the Regional Carnival which is to be held on March 27 at Watermarc in Greensborough. We are currently working through results and are finalising the team. This event should appear on Compass early next week.
A big thank you to our staff, Jack O’Shea and Lauren Jacobs, who worked each end of the pool seamlessly keeping the events, marshaling, timing, and recording running smoothly; to Josh Bartholomew for his excellent tone and informative work on the PA System, getting all students to their events on time. Most importantly, the day could not have run so well without the great work from our Sports Captains and Student Helpers. They did an amazing job all day, they showed teamwork, maturity and leadership, mixed in with a sense of fun. We couldn’t be prouder of this group of students.
On the 4th of March, the Senior Girls soccer team had their first round of the Premier League Soccer tournament at Darebin International Sports Centre. The Premier League soccer is a competition that our senior girls soccer team were invited to play in this year, due to their success in previous years. The team consisted of players from years 9-12 and we came up against Maribyrnong College - it was a tough game against a very strong opponent.
After a difficult first half we came in at the half time break 4 -0 down; the girls had played well but a few mistakes had proved costly. The girls came out fired up after half time and got one back with Matilda Lohrey making a great run into the box and being taken down, which earnt her a penalty that she converted comfortably. Maribyrnong then piled on a few more goals and despite us scoring another goal with some great play through Freja Lindgren, Maribyrnong were too good and were comfortable winners with the final score 9 – 2. Despite the score, the girls played well and will be better having played a game together and will be ready for their next game on Monday the 18th of March when we take on University High School.
Mr Prowse-Wilkins
NHS had 6 students (Niamh, Amira and Javier Tabit, Nicholas D'Orazio, Archie Noakes and Douglas Buckeridge) competing in 11 events over the past two weekends at the 2019 Victorian State Track & Field Championships. At the end of a long hot athletics season, they all did themselves proud. Between them they recorded an impressive 8 top 10 finishes, with Amira Tabit alone finishing top 10 in three separate (and gruelling!) events - the Women's U15 800m, 1500m and 3000m. Another highlight for the championships was Niamh Tabit and Douglas Buckeridge each winning 2 gold medals. Both secured 1500m and 3000m doubles in convincing style in the Women's U15 and Men's U17 age groups respectively.
Thanks again to our school parent, Duncan Buckeridge for sending us through this report. We love to hear about our students who compete outside of school. Once again an exciting year ahead for the above students as they head into our Track and Field and Cross Country events next term. A huge congratulations to all, we know they work hard training for such events and this shows in their excellent results.
On Tuesday 12th March eighteen Year 7 students travelled to the Lakeside Tennis Club in Reservoir to experience competitive tennis against four local high schools: Thornbury, Preston, Lalor and Lalor North.
Despite difficult weather conditions and one court being out of action all students got to play both singles and doubles.
Although none of our three teams progressed to the next round, the students participated constructively and played with an excellent attitude. Due to the large number of students – five schools with several teams each – and the limited number of courts there was a quite a lot of unavoidable down time. The students dealt with this very well and practiced their tennis skills in the adjacent recreation area which luckily had a brick wall ideal for hitting against.
Thank you to Pauline Dridan who as usual went the extra mile without being asked – in this case lending her runners to a student who had forgotten hers and also providing her with lunch.
Students also umpired matches and students who were new to tennis learnt how to score. A productive and enjoyable day was had by all involved.
Mr Neal
We took 4 teams to compete in the Intermediate Division Volleyball Competition which was held at Darebin Community Sports Stadium on March 14. Both of our boys teams fought hard throughout the day. Our Northcote B team finished on top of their pool which qualified them to play off in the final against Lalor. In a nail biter taking it to the 3rd set Lalor came out as overall winners on the day.
It was tough competition for our Girls teams who played off against each other in their first match. It was a close one with Northcote A narrowly defeating Northcote B. Our Northcote A girls continued their winning streak finishing off top of their pool then defeating Lalor in the Final to take home the cup.
