Principal's Message

Dear Parents/Carers,

“Empowering students for learning and life”

High Expectations for our

Year 12 VCE and Year 12 VCAL students

Last week, Year 12 parents received another progress report, which summarises their student’s attendance, progress to date and timely submission of work.  These reports form the basis of our discussion with our Year 12 VCE and VCAL students, focusing on how we can best assist them in achieving their goals and providing wellbeing support if needed. Mr Scott Rumble, Mr Anthony Brannan and myself with be reviewing the VCE and VCAL reports and discuss with the students their grade point average and progress to date.  Over the course of the term, we will continue to meet with our Year 12 VCE and VCAL students and invite parents as required.

NAPLAN

A mentioned in the last newsletter our Year 7 and 9 students are currently sitting the NAPLAN on line.  I am very happy to report that the process has run very smoothly with no issues with technology that some schools had faced.  Our students were engaged and on task and it was pleasing to see them taking the NAPLAN seriously.   The testing will finish this Thursday with Friday being catch up for students who are absent.  When the results become available our teachers will review them and identify areas that our students need more support with. Parents will receive their students individual results in the mail.

Year 9 NAPLAN certificates of achievement

A new feature of the NAPLAN assessment is being launched this year, with the award of Year 9 Certificates of Achievement.

The new certificates aim to celebrate and recognise the importance of both excellence and learning growth.

Beginning in 2021, Year 9 students who achieve outstanding results or who significantly improve their results in NAPLAN tests will receive a NAPLAN Certificate of Achievement.

The certificates will be awarded for two categories of achievement:

* Category one: the achievement of excellence through getting a result in the top band for reading or numeracy, or both.

* Category two: the achievement of outstanding learning growth through improve by two or more bands between the NAPLAN Year 7 and Year 9 tests for reading or numeracy, or both. For more information about the new certificate and measures for learning growth, refer to Year 9 NAPLAN certificates of achievement on the Department’s website.

House Athletics

The College Athletics Carnival will take place next Friday, May 28th, and I remind all students to consent as soon as possible.

This can be done through the events module in Compass. We encourage all of our students to dress in their house colours on the day and get involved in as many events as they can. We look forward to another great College sporting event.

Student Attitude to School Survey

At Lyndhurst Secondary College we want our students to tell us what they think.

As mentioned in the last newsletter, we are conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of our school. The Attitudes to School survey is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training. The survey assists schools in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and experience of school.

We are currently have around 50% of our students complete the survey, which has been put on hold while the Year 7 & 9 students were undertaking NAPLAN. The survey will resume next week.

As outlined in the last newsletter, we listen to our students, run focus groups and where possible make changes, examples of which are the upgrade to the toilets, changes to our school uniform, and students wearing their uniform on PE/Sports and Academy days.    Once we receive the data back from the department, we will run focus groups and unpack the data with the students.

What our students have to say matters and we look forward to receiving more feedback from them.

Year 7 Camp

Ninety of our Year 7 students with their teachers and support staff headed off to Kinglake for their three-day camp from Monday 3rd to Wednesday 5th of May.

By all accounts the camp was extremely successful, with lots of fun had by all.  Thank you to our students who upheld our school values in their attitude, behaviour and participation.  Thank you also to the staff who gave up family time to provide our students with this wonderful and valuable experience.
