Primary: Literacy Week

During the final week of Term 2, the Islamic College of Melbourne Primary School celebrated Literacy Week 2025, and what a vibrant, joyful week it was! With the theme “Book an Adventure,” students from Foundation to Year 6 were taken on imaginative journeys through the pages of their favourite books.
Throughout the week, students engaged in a rich variety of reading-inspired activities designed to spark curiosity and foster a love for literacy. From storytelling sessions and reading scavenger hunts to bookmark decoration challenges and poetry and comic strip competitions, every day brought new opportunities for students to explore the wonder of words.
One of the standout moments was the Reading Picnic, which took place indoors in the new Foundation building foyer. Held during the winter months, the setting provided a warm and cosy environment, perfect for reading and storytelling. The foyer was beautifully decorated to ignite students' imaginations, featuring a vibrant and creatively styled reading space. During the picnic, teachers read books aloud to students, creating a shared experience that was both calming and inspiring. It was a joy to see students deeply engaged, listening attentively as stories came to life in such a thoughtful and inviting setting.
We were also privileged to host two special guest authors: Andrew McDonald, who captivated students with insights into his writing journey, and Sarah Speedie, who led a series of workshops with our Year 6 students throughout the term. These sessions culminated in a beautiful Year 6 Anthology which was officially launched during the Literacy Week Assembly. The launch was a proud and celebratory moment, recognising the creativity, voice, and effort of our senior students.
The daily recess and lunchtime activities added extra excitement and variety. Students took part in storytelling sessions, art competitions, riddles, quizzes, and even had the chance to design their own crowns and learn how to draw popular book characters. Our SRC leaders did a fantastic job supporting and running these sessions with enthusiasm and leadership.
On Thursday, 19 June, our Primary School students and staff came together for the grand finale: the Literacy Week Assembly and Book Character Dress-Up Day.
The creativity on display was incredible! From wizards and detectives to classic fairy tale characters, students proudly dressed as their favourite storybook heroes.
The assembly featured a moving Quran recitation, student poem presentations, an interview segment with Year 6 anthology contributors, and the announcement of competition winners. The event concluded with an engaging live performance titled “The Crown and the Creed,” which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Literacy Week 2025 was a true celebration of reading, writing, and imagination. It brought our school community together through stories that inspire, entertain, and teach us valuable lessons. A heartfelt thank you goes out to our dedicated staff, student leaders, and families for helping to make the week such a success.
May the love of reading continue to grow in the hearts of our students, turning every book they open into a new adventure.
