Term 1 Week 8

Feature News : Indonesian/Kitchen Garden

Selamat siang semua!

These past few weeks have really flown by!

In Foundation, students have been practicing how to ask and answer their names - but watch out, there are a few imposter Bu Mundy students in the class! Students are now learning to say all different colours, practicing using a song and learning through making different items. This week, they have made the Indonesian flag to practice the colours merah and putih.

Students in 1/2 have completed their unit on clothes and were able to write about a variety of clothes and their colours. Over the last few weeks, they have been learning about some traditional clothes of Indonesia, including trying on some kebaya, udeng and sarong from Bali!

3/4 students have now completed their hobbies unit - you will have seen their portfolios appear over the last week or so on Seesaw! Why not ask them how to translate their sentences and what they mean? This week, we played lots of different cultural games - some favourites were bekel, boi-boian and congklak.

In the senior school, students were excited to hear we were starting our olahraga (sports) unit, as this was a student-voice unit decided from earlier in the year. Students have practiced the skills from sepak takraw, bulu tangkis and are excited awaiting our final sport in the last week of term after camp.

The Indonesian Leadership Team have been busy providing signs for all classes to practice Indonesian skills within the classroom! Students can use this language to help reinforce what has been taught in Indonesian classes. You might even hear that teachers are practising their own Indonesian - asking students to sit down "duduklah" or using "terima kasih" "sama-sama" as they hand out sanitizer!

Kitchen Garden

The juniors have been busy planting, watering and weeding in the garden - all our seeds are growing well from the last few weeks! Keep an eye on the school instagram for posts and pictures of our activities!

The 3/4 classes have been "shopping the pantry" the last few weeks of cooking! Students were able to brainstorm 4-5 different meals from what was left from our pantry! That means that each class has ended up cooking a slightly different meal - but more recipes for you to try at home! Here are some of the recipes from the senior school!

HUGE thank you the Vespa, Lola and the Plumridge family for the donation of gloves - we now have a range of sizes for all students, which makes gardening a much more enjoyable experience!

Another HUGE thank you to Tom, Elspeth and the Moore family for their donation of delicious home-grown pumpkins! They are absolute beauties and we can't wait to cook with them!

Banana Pancakes

Ingredients

  • 1 Mashed ripe banana
  • 1 cup plain flour (with 1 tsp baking powder) OR 1 cup self-raising flour
  • 1 cup milk of choice (we use soy)
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 cup oil

Method

  1. Mash the ripe banana in a bowl
  2. In a separate bowl, add all dry ingredients. Mix if using plain flour and baking powder.
  3. Add in milk, vanilla, oil and mix until smooth consistency.
  4. Add in banana and mix one final time.
  5. Cook on a non-stick frying pan for 2-3 minutes until bubbles form and flip carefully using a spatula. If your pan isn't non-stick, use a small amount of oil and heat oil before adding batter.
  6. Serve hot with honey - yum!

Mie Goreng (Indonesian fried noodles)

Ingredients

  • 1 onion
  • 1 carrot
  • 1/2 zucchini
  • 1/2 bag of beans (around 200g beans)
  • 1 tsp garlic
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp kecap manis (sweet soy sauce)
  • 1 tsp sambal or chilli sauce (optional!)
  • 3 noodle cakes/packet of noodles
  • 1 tbsp oil

Method

  1. Begin heating your water for the noodles - these noodles cook quickly!
  2. Dice the onion, carrot and zucchini.
  3. Chop the beans into small pieces
  4. Fry the onion in 1 tbsp oil with the garlic until translucent
  5. Add in carrots and cook for a further 2 minutes before adding in zucchini and beans.
  6. Add in half the soy sauce and kecap manis (1/2 tbsp soy and 1 tbsp kecap manis) to veggies.
  7. Strain the noodles from the water, add to frying pan and add the rest of the sauce. Mix carefully to ensure all noodles are covered!
  8. If you like, serve with sambal or hot sauce!
