Sports Update

Toni Palmer Memorial Shield

Wow - What a day! On Wednesday I had the absolute pleasure of taking our Open Rugby League team to Inverell to participate in the Inaugural Toni Palmer Memorial Shield…and participate we did! Having no bench players (due to illness), our boys stood up to the challenge and played with an extremely high level of skill, heart, determination and sportsmanship. St Joseph’s won the carnival, moving through each game undefeated. This win makes them one of the top 8 Catholic School teams in NSW. They will now progress to the Northern Semi Finals in Port Macquarie on 4 August. Congratulations boys!

Mr McManus and I even received the following email from Mrs Hardaker (Armidale Diocesan Primary Sports Council);

I just wanted to write a quick email to you both to congratulate St Joseph’s Glen Innes on their win today. Not only were the boys humble in their winnings throughout the entire day, they also displayed fantastic sportsmanship and respect to the referees at all times.

The team today was a credit to St Joseph’s Glen Innes and represented their families and school with pride. Each player thanked me for the day and truly meant it. You should be very proud of them all. I wish the team all the best at the Northern Semi Final in Port Macquarie.

A huge thank you to Shad Bailey and Mark Barratt for their guidance and coaching of the team. Also, thank you to our amazing parents for their encouragement and support. We look forward to your support and assistance in Port Macquarie!

 Armidale Diocesan Cricket Trials

Congratulations to Harrison Bailey for his selection in the Armidale Diocesan Open Boys Cricket Team. Harrison will participate at the Polding Cricket Trials in Lismore next term. Congratulations Harrison. Well done to Patrick Wright, who also attended the trials and represented St Joseph’s with pride.

Athletics Carnival

Due to significant staff and student absences this week, the difficult decision was made to postpone the Athletics Carnival. The new date for the carnival will be Friday 29 July (Week 2). The venues and planning will remain the same. For those students who haven’t completed their High Jump, they will be caught up early next term.

NSWPSSA Cross Country

Best wishes to Fletcher Barratt and Aila McBain who will compete at the NSWPSSA Cross Country Championships at Eastern Creek on 22 July (Term 3, Week 1).  I’m sure they will continue training hard over the holidays and they will do themselves and St Joseph's proud. Good luck!
