Medical Student Visit

University of Melbourne

On 29th March our students had the opportunity to speak with current University of Melbourne medical students who are based at the Department of Rural Health Clinical school in Shepparton. They were able to share their pathways to careers in medicine.  Of interest to regional students is the partnership between LaTrobe University and University of Melbourne where students undertake the Bachelor of Biomedical Science/Medical. The initial three years are completed at LaTrobe University’s Bendigo campus with students, who manage to maintain good results throughout, going on to a further four years in the Doctor of Medicine at Shepparton. Regional towns need doctors and it will be great to see our young people completing this degree and staying in the area.

Year 12 Pathways Mentor Session

On Wednesday 23rd MarchYear 12 students spent time in the bleachers listening to Fiona Smolenaars, from Greater Shepparton City Council, talking about politics. Fiona Smolenaars posed a number of questions to the students asking them for their point of view to a variety of questions about our regional area. It was great to see very thoughtful responses from our seniors and there might just be a future politician in the room.

Year 11 Pathways Mentor Session

Wednesday 23rd March

Today’s session involved all Year 11s meeting together to hear from guest speakers with the aim of improving and looking after their mental health and their physical health.

During the first half of the session, the students heard from our school Mental Health Practitioners, Narelle Pell and Lay Napier. They presented information about how students could look after their mental health, recognise signs of stress, where to go to get support and where to go for help if needed. The Mental Health Practitioner’s role in the school is a valuable addition to other Wellbeing staff students can access, if required.

The second half of the session involved a presentation from two Ambulance Victoria officers. They informed the students of strategies on ‘How to look after their mates’ when in situations that may involve alcohol or drugs. They encouraged students to make safe choices and to always be looking after each other. Some other key points included:

  • Ring 000 immediately if required
  • Be aware of the recovery position and use it if needed
  • Make safe and responsible choices around drugs and alcohol

Morrisby Profiling

Year 9 Morrisby Profiling is still being completed by students and will continue into Term 2. Morrisby Profiling exists to help every student take on a rewarding career journey that suits their abilities, personality and ambition.

Once the test is completed students will have an interview with a Morrisby specialist to discuss potential career pathways. They will also receive special print outs of their results. It is completely free and a valuable experience for all. Students can only complete the Morrisby with parental permission. Forms are available from Careers Practitioners in each Neighbourhood as listed below. We have managed to secure a computer room for students who previously were unable to do the Morrisby. Details of when a student is required to complete the profiling will be in the student bulletin . Any other questions? See your Careers Practitioner.

Year 12 Victoria Police visit

Ryan Coleman, Victoria Police, recently presented to Year 12 students about the importance of looking after your mates. He addressed the risks associated with alcohol, drug use, dangerous driving and the laws and penalties associated with these. Ryan also provided suggestions and tips on how students can best support their mates and where they can go for additional support and assistance.
