Around the Classrooms

Foundation

This week in Foundation, students have continued to explore new phonemes and the grapheme choices available for these sounds. For example, on Monday, students looked at the /c/ sound and how it can look different in words. We explored /c/ as in cat, /k/ as in kite and /ck/ as in sick!

Students have also started presenting information of their families using photos and drawings from home. It has been terrific to see students use new vocabulary in their presentations, asking each other questions and listen intently to their peers.

Most importantly, we would like to congratulate the Foundation students on their success this semester. Over the past 11 weeks, we have seen amazing growth from our students regarding their social, emotional and academic learning which has been driven by their ongoing effort and enthusiasm. We hope families have wonderful holiday break and we’ll see you back in term 2!

Year 1 and 2

Our 1/2 students have been working hard all term on their gold rush content knowledge. We are so excited for our dress up day this Wednesday (April 6th).  We can't wait to see all the students dressed up in their best 1850s costumes, ready to have a go at some fun gold rush day activities! Please see some photos for inspiration about what students could wear this Wednesday.

Year 3 and 4

Over the last few weeks, students in Grade 3/4 have been learning about constructing high quality paragraphs. We've learnt about different types of sentences, their purpose, how detail can improve our paragraphs and proper nouns. This week, students published their first paragraphs all about continents of the world. Check out some of our examples below!

Year 5 and 6

We have had another busy week in the grade 4/5/6 classrooms.

In literacy, students have continued to grow their knowledge on the Japanese Feudal system. We have drawn maps that demonstrate where those in the Japanese hierarchy lived in relation to one another and also got to explore the art forms of Kabuki and Noh drama whilst learning about the history of origami and attempting our own origami pieces… SERENITY NOW! Our text construction lessons have seen us start to piece together everything we have learnt as we start to publish our information texts on Feudal Japan.

During maths we have continued our focus on addition and subtraction. Students have been taught multiple strategies to solve equations such as the vertical method, jump strategy and split strategy. We then got to put all of these strategies to good use on our “Crack the code” scavenger hunt. Students who were able to crack the code, discovered that “In maths it is ok to be wrong but it is not ok to not try”.

We look forward to our final busy week of term where we will get to piece together everything we have learnt this term and wrap it up in a nice little bow.
