PDHPE

Welcome to PDHPE for Term 1. Staff and students have already been very productive and are looking forward to an energetic and rewarding year ahead as we move quickly through Term 1.

Year 7

Year 7 has begun this term participating in Initiation Games such as group scavenger hunts and Athletics activities within their practical lessons. Students will also be challenged through a variety of problem solving and cross country activities throughout the term.

Inside the classroom, Year 7 have started working through a unit of work focusing on Change in Relationships in which they take a strengths based approach to looking at interactions they have with people around them, and focus on how to maintain positive relationships. We encourage all students to continue this conversation outside the classroom with their parents.

Year 8

Year 8 has recently started working on Self and Relationships. Throughout this term students will identify new relationships, bullying and work on finding ways to support themselves and their peers within the Mater Dei Catholic College setting. These issues are extremely relevant as students move through adolescence and you are encouraged to view and read through your child’s work during this time. In practical classes, Year 8 have begun Sofcrosse  and Vortex based invasion games.

Year 9

Year 9 has been participating in Athletics, focusing particularly on the throws and jumps, and then moving onto baton relays, sprints and finishing the end of the term with preparation for the Cross Country.  In theory lessons students have begun working through a Respectful Relationships unit, where students identify change and challenges in their life and look towards the future with a positive mindset.

Year 9 Child Studies

This is a new course this year and students have started to explore the world of an expectant parent; looking at how to begin a nursery and how expensive items can be when preparing for the birth of a first child. Students will shortly look at budgeting and keeping the home a safe place for a child. The students will begin their “Care for an Egg Baby” task during this term, where they need to keep an egg safe for three days and document their time caring for their egg.

Year 9 Outdoor Education

Students are getting prepared for their rock climbing excursion to Airborne Gymnastics. They are seen in the photos practising their belaying and harnessing, in preparation for their excursion. Later in the term students will attend a caving excursion to Wee Jasper.

Year 11 Sport Life and Recreation (SLR)

Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation students have begun a new 2 Unit Course, which has seen them involved in self managed, varied and engaging activities so far this year. Utilising the SNAP Fitness gym, students have begun developing and participating in their own personalised resistance training programs where they are focusing on sports specific improvement and general fitness principles.

Students have also been organising and participating in a range of individual, team and competitive games in which they have developed scoring systems, rules, tournament structures and results collation. The aim of these programs is to provide opportunities within sport, fitness and physical activity should they choose to follow this pathway in the future.

Year 11 Exploring Early Childhood (EEC)

A small group of students has started the 1 and 2 unit EEC Courses this year. Currently students are either very excited or noticeably nervous about caring for the Virtual newborn baby for a weekend! So far we have had some very capable ‘carers’, with Rhiannon Edge and Ruby Raczowski both doing a superb job of caring for the baby.
