Staff in the Spotlight

Staff in the Spotlight

With so many staff joining our team this year, we would like to give our school community the opportunity to get to know our new teachers in a fun way. Each week we will be spotlighting a new staff member and sharing with you all sorts of fun and interesting stories about who they are and most importantly, why they became a teacher and what they love most about teaching!

This week we are introducing Luke Mason. Luke is an experienced teacher who is adding his expertise to the Humanities team and next term will be one of our year 10 Year Level Leaders.

How long have you been teaching?

This is my fifth year of teaching

What school/university or organisation have you come from?

I attended University at ACU

Why did you decide to become a teacher?

During Year 12 I was unsure as to what I would do after High School was over. I was coaching basketball in particular coaching Under 12's. There was a realisation that teaching could be something I would like to pursue, as I thrived on those moments when the players on the team would implement something that they had learned in training during a game situation, that light bulb moment and then later excitement from the level of confidence that they had gained. I then begun my teaching degree, attended my placements and realised I was where I needed to be.

What do you love most about teaching?

Empowering students to become independent learners, to the point that I act more as a coach to assist them through their own endeavours. I have found that at the VCE level when young adults arrive at this point, it is a fulfilling moment.

What has been one of your best teaching moments?

No specific moments, but a collection of students who have left their high school experience with a true sense of purpose and readiness to tackle either work or University. I think that is the true reason any teacher joins the industry. To enable future successful citizens.

What are three things you would like your students to know about you?

A Hawthorn supporter, so go easy on me this season. I secretly enjoy the psychology of (Wrestling/WWE). I love a vast majority of film and television so feel free to share your favourites.

Where's your favourite holiday destination?

I loved Vietnam. The food and people were truly remarkable and was a place I would love to go. But deep down I have a real soft spot for the Grampians, cannot describe, but have always had a connection with this area.

What are tv show/series did you last binge watch?

Drive To Survive (Season 4)

If you could wear Harry's invisibility cloak for one day, where would you go and what would you do?

Perhaps sneak into a movie set and watch how the A Lister actors go about their craft. Would love to see Daniel Day Lewis in his element. Either that or watch a team meeting at Mercedes Formula One and see the great Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff discussing race strategy

What is the one piece of 'advice' or the one thing that you always say to your students?

Do not do anything, ever, if you are not willing to least give it your full attention.
