On Friday 29th April we held our first whole school assembly for Term 2 in honour of ANZAC Day. Our College Captains (Cherub, Skyline, Mikaira and Zahra) and SRC Captains (Carlos and Fereshta) led the assembly. We were grateful to be joined by Bunurong Land Council Elder Sonia Weston-Hume and Berwick RSL Member Ray Heathcote. The Laying of the Wreaths was done by our Student House Leaders, and one of our Year 12 Students Ashley Belgica performed the National Anthem and 'I Am Australian'. Thank you to our guests, those involved in organising the assembly, and to our students who remained respectful and attentive throughout the assembly.

ANZAC Artwork and Symbols

To accompany our ANZAC assembly, a small temporary artwork was installed yesterday in front of our permanent Remembrance mural, the main courtyard. The idea and the majority of work behind this came from Kareena Chaudhary (8G) with some support from other Street Art students. Note the pot with live Rosemary too, courtesy of Ms.Taylor.

Poppy symbolism - The red poppy is the enduring symbol of remembrance of the First World War. The poppy's origin as a popular symbol of remembrance lies in the landscapes of the First World War. Poppies were a common sight, especially on the Western Front. They were the only plant that flourished in the soil churned up by the fighting and shelling.

Rosemary symbolism - is an ancient symbol of fidelity and remembrance. The aromatic herb grows wild on the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey, where the original Anzacs served in World War I. Australians traditionally wear sprigs of rosemary as a symbol of remembrance on Anzac Day or Remembrance Day.

At the assembly, students also read out the stories of Australian soldiers who fought at the Battle of Fromelle on July 19th/20th 1916, performing in 'first person'.
