Student achievements

Congratulations to the following students:

Emma Grubb (Year 9), who competed at the Athletics Tasmania All Schools Championships and came away with silver in the U16 girls 100m and 200m, and bronze in the U16 girls 400m. This is a fabulous achievement for Emma, as the event showcases some of Tasmania's best young talent across track and field.

Maya Bearman (Year 6) and Abbey Holloway (Year 10), who have been recognised for their hard work and commitment to swimming.

Maya was named the 2020-21 Tasmanian Age 11/U Swimmer of the Year and Abbey, the 2020-21 Tasmanian Age 15 Years Swimmer of the Year. Maya was also the recipient of the Eastern Shore Sharks Scholarship. 

 

Both girls train exceptionally hard with the Hobart Aquatic Club, and it is wonderful to see their efforts pay off. 

 

Grace Campbell (Year 10), who has been announced as the Tasmanian winner of the national ABC Heywire Competition for her non-fiction writing.

This competition encourages young people, aged 16 to 22 years living in regional or rural Australia, to tell stories about their life in text, photo, video or audio format. 

 

Grace's winning entry will be recorded by the ABC and published on the Heywire website

 

Grace will also have the opportunity to join winners from other states and territories for a week in Canberra in 2022. 

 

Georgia Thurling (Year 7), who has been commended by the judges of the Young Tasmanian Writers' Prize for her short story, Hold on Hippo!

Judge, Stephen Brown commented that Georgia's piece was 'a well-conveyed family scene with a light environmental touch'. 

 

Adding to her recent success in English, Georgia received a Special Mention in the Beatrice Clarke Poetry Award. 

 

Davina Cox (Year 9), who is in the cast for the upcoming pantomime, The Story of the Grumbly Green Grouch, presented by The Hobart Repertory Society.

The pantomime will run at The Playhouse Theatre on Sunday 28 November, Friday 3 December and Sunday 5 December 2021. 

 

Jess Ransley and Isabelle Hoggett (Year 9), who together won the Future of STEM Award for their STEM-based project, ‘Grow Beans Grow’, entered into the STEM MAD competition.

The project involved analysing the growth of plants in manure, compost and potting mix, as well as the pH of the soil. 

 

The girls will now advance to the national competition where they will compete against Catholic school students from around Australia. 

 

SMC Book Week Writing Prize

 

The following students have achieved success in the St Mary's College's Book Week Writing Prize.
