From the Classroom... Room D1

D1 -Week 10

Weather: This week and last week we have been focussing on the weather. We have been observing the sky and the clouds, discussing the temperature and deciding on appropriate clothing recommendations to match our findings.

Spring: To celebrate spring we have gotten a little bit crafty and made daffodils. We practiced our skills in colouring in, cutting and pasting and using scissors to make fringing cuts in paper. The daffodils are a bright addition to the classroom.

Predicting: during reading, we have been practicing making predictions (no, we are not moonlighting as fortune tellers) We are using our prior knowledge and the information in the text to make predictions of what will happen next.

This is a strategy you might like to try when you are reading together at home.

  • Stop near the end and then have your child draw and write about what they predict will happen next.
  • Discuss why these predictions were made and then read the rest of the book.
  • Reflect on the prediction. Was it accurate or not?

Maths: we have been exploring addition and doubles in maths with partner games. Dino-Doubles involves rolling a dice and doubling the number and placing a counter on the board to cover that number. Bump is when two dice are rolled and then the two numbers are added together. Place a block on the board to cover that number. If your partner has a block on that number you can BUMP them off.

It has been a great first week together for our final week of term. Over the holidays you can keep encouraging your children to make predictions when reading, discuss the weather, add numbers together and enjoy the springtime and make the most of playing together outside.

I'd like to start by sending out a huge thank you to all of the D1 students and their families for making me feel so welcome. Taking over the class on day one of the last lockdown was not part of the plan but it was still a pleasure to start to get to know the kids during our whole class and small group meetings.

We haven't been back on site for a week yet, but I already feel like I belong. I look forward to spending the rest of the year learning together, forming stronger relationships and making memories.

Cheers,

Rick - D1.
