New Staff

This week I would like to welcome Sheryl Anderson into the role of Administrative Assistant: Wellbeing and Compliance.

Sheryl joins us from Hilcrest Christian College where she held the position of Personal Assistant to the Director of Performing Arts.

When asked what Sheryl was most looking forward to about her role at Kilbreda she responded: “I’m looking forward to joining a new team of like-minded colleagues who possess a common goal to undertake the Brigidine Values of Compassion, Courage, Hope, Hospitality, Justice and Wonder. When researching Kilbreda some weeks back, I really ‘wowed’ at the Brigidine Motto of  Strength and Kindliness."

The thing that struck Sheryl the most on her first day at the College was “the welcoming staff, coupled with the comfortable environment throughout the Kilbreda community inside the majestic historic buildings.”

'Shine a Light On'...

‘Shine a Light on' provides our College community a snapshot into the professional lives of our teachers and what makes them ‘tick’ on a daily basis. Whilst we know that our staff do an amazing job, it is not as often that we publicly acknowledge the work that they do and the many wonderful ways that they contribute to the learning journeys of our students.

This week at the College we are profiling Mr Adam Cavanagh. Adam is a teacher within the Mathematics Learning Area.

What originally inspired you to become a teacher and what motivates you now?

I had always thought about being a teacher when I was at school.  I loved my time at school, especially learning from great teachers! After school, I studied Civil Engineering and ended up working as a traffic engineer in Australia and Ireland for over 10 years.  When I returned from Ireland, I decided it was “now or never”. So at the age of 35 I went back to university to study a Master of Teaching. I loved being back at university and doing teaching rounds.

I remember hearing my first “I get it now” from a Year 7 student when comparing decimal numbers.  It is those “AH-AH” moments that motivate me, as well as seeing students succeed after hard work and dedication.

What is the most rewarding part of teaching subjects within the Mathematics Learning Areas at Kilbreda College?

Prior to Joining Kilbreda College, I mainly taught junior Mathematics. So, over the past two years I have found it very rewarding teaching Year 12 Further Mathematics for the first time.

Although a lot of hard work, I have found it fulfilling teaching new content and taking on this challenge, particularly during the Pandemic. It has been an intense two years, especially learning the new technologies. However, my students have been great! I especially love it when some of them get addicted to doing trial exam papers.

I really enjoy working within the Mathematics Learning Area where everyone supports each other and is generous with their time and resources.
