Year 10 Japanese - Japan Foundation Furoshiki Workshop

Japanese this year during lockdown was definitely a challenge, as face-to-face conversations are very different than talking to a screen! Although other incursions were cut short due to lockdown, the workshop on 21 October was an opportunity to do something fun and taught us more about Japanese culture and history.

Learning how to wrap with Furoshiki was fun and a little hard to do! The Furoshiki workshop was a gateway to becoming more sustainable and reducing our usage of plastic bags. Plus, it looks really kawaii. We would consider using it in our everyday lives for things such as carrying our lunch box whilst also incorporating Japanese culture into our daily lives.

The Year 10 students really immersed themselves in some Japanese culture with the Furoshiki! I enjoyed wrapping with Furoshiki using the Mamusubi Knot which consisted of two knots and was easy to learn. However, executing these knots to look neat was hard!

Furoshiki has been used over a thousand years and I would still love to use it as a wrapping for treats and presents to give to my friends and family!

Dante Alighieri Poetry Recitation Competition

After the cancellation of the 'Dante Alighieri Poetry Recitation' competition in 2020 due to the pandemic, this year students were invited to participate in a modified format of the competition organised by the Dante Alighieri Society Melbourne, for Victorian schools, where students were judged internally at their school within their individual levels.

All students in the Year 9 and 10 Italian classes had the experience of learning and memorising an Italian poem as one of their assessment tasks in first semester. However, it was optional to participate in the state wide competition. There were 25 students from Years 9 to 12 who chose to participate in the event scheduled to take place at the beginning of Term 3.

Despite several postponements, our students rose to the occasion and demonstrated their well-practised skills when they made their final recitations on 7 September in an online web conference with the adjudicator from Dante Alighieri Society.

Their performances were a credit to themselves, their teachers and the dedication of our Italian Language Assistant, Maria Giorgianni, who helped them prepare their poems over the months. The students have been presented with their certificates on their return to onsite learning this week.

Student Reflection

Italian students across the year levels were able to participate in the 'Dante Alighieri Poetry Recitation' competition. We selected a poem out of the choices provided and over the last few months, memorised the poems and perfected our expression, along with working on our pronunciation.

This year’s competition was unlike other years, as we had to recite the poem online instead of in person to the adjudicator. Overall the 'Dante Alighieri Poetry Recitation' competition was a great opportunity for the Italian students to experience Italian poetry. We were challenged with our oral skills and despite the tough circumstances everyone persevered, and we managed to complete our goals. We are very lucky to have had this experience.
