Care and Compassion

“We act in a kind and compassionate manner, we consider the needs & feelings of others, we are inclusive & supportive.” – Croydon Hills Primary School

There are so many reasons why our community needs care and compassion.  We are in a world that doesn’t feel as safe as it once did.  Almost everyone I have spoken with in the last month has an overwhelming sense of pain and defeat in their eyes.   I am sure we all know someone who has in one way, or another decided to ‘give up’.  Isolation is painful. Restrictions are painful. It is apparent the world is in a season of grief and loss, and that, all of this is okay.  Pain is part of being human, so is failure, so is loss.  It is the moments that we feel at are lowest that help us apricate the moments we are our highest all that much more.  Knowing what it feels like to be defeated helps us to comfort others, now and in our future that are in a similar situation.  All of this points to the reality that not only do we need care and compassion, but we are currently full of potential to grow and strengthen our care and compassion abilities.

This week I dug into what care and compassion actually mean and what they actively look like.  Compassion requires empathy and understanding to show care and concern. Care is the provision of what is necessary for the health and welfare of someone.  When I think about showing care and compassion I picture about a warm hug and a meal, but there are so many ways someone can show care and compassion.  Below are some videos that explore care and compassion further.  One of the videos tells a story of compassion in action, so we can see what it looks like.  The other video helps you to practise using and growing your own sense of compassion using mindfulness techniques.
