Maths Talent Quest
Over the past few months, a group of Middle School students has been putting in some extra time to participate in the Maths Talent Quest (MTQ) - a statewide competition run by the Mathematical Association of Victoria. The MTQ gave our students the opportunity to explore the maths in anything they were interested in!
After brainstorming possible ideas, our students began either working independently or in small teams to investigate their topics of choice. Some of the investigations included: ‘water use of different families’, ‘how often car tyres spin on the way to school’, ‘popular after school activities’, ‘the amount of angles in a house’… and even ‘how much water can be saved if you only flush when you poop!’
The students faced the difficulties of COVID and completing portions of their investigations remotely, which is a great credit to their work ethic and personal responsibility as learners. Student agency was a highlight right throughout the MTQ!
We have received their results this week, and all students should be very proud of their achievements!
Thank you to all the parents and carers at home for supporting these students in their investigations, and thank you to the brilliant Middle School teachers - Belinda Kaberry, Jarrod Butcher and Marc Purcell - for their organisation and efforts in running all onsite sessions and extending the students in their mathematical thinking skills.
