From the Wellbeing Team

October 2021

We have been busy as we kicked off term 4, with sudden changes to restrictions, campuses being closed briefly, but also in positive ways – our College Wellbeing Team has been working hard to prepare for students transitioning between year levels or for year 8 students moving to the Goldsworthy Campus.

Over the next few weeks, the Wellbeing Team will be meeting, hopefully in person, with all our wonderful year 8 students before heading off to the Goldsworthy Campus next year.  The wellbeing-based groups are also back up and running for term 4 across our campuses, with a particular focus on social skills and interpersonal development as we return from extended periods of remote learning.

I was reminded this week about how trees in a forest communicate and interact with each other.  We usually think of trees as being isolated and individual things, but trees are in fact more connected than we might think.  Trees that grow in proximity to other trees communicate with each other, share resources, and in most cases help each other to thrive.  An older tree will share nutrients with the younger trees around it, helping them to grow into wonderful big trees too.

Over the next few weeks, try to focus on how you might have received wisdom or skills from older people in your life, and perhaps, how you too can share wisdom, knowledge, and skills with the younger people in your life.  Even when it feels like we are alone, we are all very connected.

Skill on the Grill

At Peacock campus, we have been running an Independent Living Skills program 'Skill on the Grill' with some of our year 7/8 students.

This program supports students to learn skills around hygiene in the kitchen, teamwork/cooperation, utilising various kitchen aids, following recipes of their choice, and the versatility of food. Students choose what they would like to cook over the 6 weeks and receive a booklet at the end with all the recipes they have used in the program.

This program would not be possible without the support and kind donations of the Rotary Club Geelong. We would like to take this opportunity to thank them for investing in this program and supporting the students at out campus.
