Years 7 - 9 Update

YEAR 9

Science - Is it worth the risk?

Across term 3 and into the start of term 4, students in Science in year 9 have been combining learning about the science of the atom and nuclear power, with critical thinking and ethical skill-building. They have learned about nuclear fission, the process that drives nuclear power, understanding its pros and cons. Alongside this they have learned about ideas from ethics that help us decide what is right and help us make decisions. These have included the concept of duty, values and the balance of judging actions based on intentions or consequences. This work has culminated in students writing a persuasive piece, answering the question Is it worth the risk?, with students using their science and ethics learning to draft an argument for or against nuclear power in Australia.

As you can see, the students have produced some excellent and thoughtful pieces, drawing on their understanding of Science and using their new ethical thinking and arguing skills to a high standard.

Food Studies

In their Food Studies subject, The Art of Cooking, year 9s created alien cakes, designing and decorating their out of this world creations from scratch. Clearly aliens come in many shapes and sizes, with a wide range of features!

Return to School Celebrations

To celebrate the return to onsite learning for our year 9 cohort, the team organised a ‘celebration afternoon’. Students were provided with a free lunch (including some delicious sweet treats…) and spent the afternoon reconnecting with each other and their teachers through a series of games and activities. This was a great way to welcome our students back and get them back into the swing of school and our learning community. Thanks to the whole team at Goldsworthy for helping make the afternoon a success!
