VCE Physical Education

Unit 2 Area of Study 1

In VCE PE we are currently investigating Physical Activity & Sedentary behaviour and the sociocultural factors which influence them. Physical activity comes in many forms, from organised sport and recreation to incidental activity, chores and active transport.

During extended periods of lockdown and remote learning, the importance of physical activity has become increasingly evident. Being physically active has been shown to improve mental health by reducing stress and anxiety and carries a variety of physical and social health benefits.

In our current Area of Study, we have been collecting a range of Physical activity and Sedentary behaviour data using subjective and objective methods including data from pedometers, heart rate monitors, smart phone apps such as Strava, recall surveys and activity diaries with the aim of developing a Physical Activity plan to help participants meet the National Physical Activity & Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines.

Examples of objective data collection using Strava app, provided by Jamie O.

These guidelines, set out by the Australian Government provide details on the frequency, intensity, time, and type of physical activity different age groups should be engaging in for good health.

Following the participants completion of the Physical Activity plan, we have conducted an analysis of the enablers and barriers to physical activity experienced by the participant, using the social-ecological model and suggested strategies for the participant to regularly meet the recommended levels of physical activity.
