Year 4 Urban Gardening

World Bee Day: written by Ollie, Lara and Seb.

The Year 4’s have been learning about bees in their gardening sessions on Fridays. We are here to tell you about our new bee hotel. We had to make sure that the bee hotel is facing east so the bee hotel won’t be in direct sunlight. If you go near Mr Muller’s office, you will find the bee hotel in one of the trees - don’t worry native bees don’t sting.

The purpose of the bee hotel is so native bees can lay their eggs safely  because only native bees can fit in the holes in the hotel.

Maybe you could plant some native flowers at home so you can help the bees too.

The Year 4's have been learning to use recycled materials such as milk cartons, plastic cups and yogurt tubs. We cut the milk cartons in half, put some fresh soil in them and planted seeds in the containers. We can't wait to see them grow and we hope they will grow into nutritious plants.

We also used recycled plastic sheets to line the inside of one of our raised garden beds. We did this to stop the soil from falling out and to stop the worms from escaping from the garden bed.
