English

It has been a busy start to Term 2 for English at Mackellar. Here are some updates on the exciting English events and activities that have been taking place across the school.

Premiers' Reading Challenge

The Premiers' Reading Challenge has kicked off for 2023 and Mackellar Primary School students have made a fantastic start to the Challenge! Lots of students have been logging their books online and are well on their way to completing the Challenge, which ends in September.

Each week for the duration of the Challenge, three students who have shown excellent reading progress by logging their books online will be recognised with a Reader of the Week award at our weekly Monday assembly.

Congratulations to Croydon, Charlotte and Lucas from Grade 6 for being the first recipients of the Reader of the Week awards for Week 1 of the Premiers' Reading Challenge. Both Charlotte and Croydon have read over 20 books so far and Lucas has read more than 40 books! What a fantastic effort by all three students. Keep up the great reading.

Word Mania Competition

At the beginning of Term 2, Mackellar students participated in the annual Word Mania competition, an online word building challenge for students in Grades 1-6. Students applied their knowledge of spelling strategies to play Word Mania and build as many words as they could in three minutes, from a given set of letter tiles.

Congratulations to all students who participated in the competition, your efforts have put us in the running to win up to $200,000 worth of prizes for our school.

Visit from Stephen Graham

Early in Term 2, we were fortunate to have Literacy Consultant, Stephen Graham, visit Mackellar once again. Stephen visited all classrooms to see the rich and engaging Literacy learning taking place across our school. He also had the opportunity to work with students in Grades 3 and 5 as they began their learning about factual narratives.

Stephen was very impressed by the fantastic Literacy learning happening in our classrooms and we look forward to having him visit Mackellar again soon.
