English Competitions

There are a number of competitions that run annually in Victoria which allow students to showcase their writing abilities across a number of forms.

Please see below some wonderful opportunities students may wish to enter.

Students may even decide to submit a piece they have developed as part of a class activity, or assessment, and edit and refine it for grammatical accuracy.

Independent Schools Victoria (ISV) | Poetry Competition

Calling all young poets – entries are now open for ISV’s annual Student Poetry Competition. ISV is inviting young people from across Victoria to express themselves in a celebration of poetic creativity.

Students could choose their own theme or explore the 2023 optional theme of ‘Journeys’. The journey can be physical or metaphorical.

Ralph Waldo Emerson is credited with the quote, ‘Life is a journey, not a destination’, while Winnie the Pooh declared, ‘Life is a journey to be experienced, not a problem to be solved’.

ABC Heywire Competition

Heywire is an exciting competition from the ABC, calling for stories from high school-aged students in regional, rural, and remote Australia. And they want to hear from our students!

Entries must be a true story about an aspect of a student’s life. Stories can be in any format: text, video or audio — whatever form suits them best!

Most of the entries are text but feel free to be creative. The recommended length is 400 words.

It would be great to see Girton represented in these competitions.
