ANZAC DAY CEREMONY

With our return to Term 2, we were fortunate to be able to take part in our ANZAC Day Ceremony. It was a beautiful and heartfelt tribute to those who served and continue to serve our country. Congratulations to Miss Jamieson and the Grade 6 Leaders on another meaningful and inspiring ceremony and the choir for singing the Australian, New Zealand and British national anthems so beautifully.

Shanai and Madison, from 5LK, reflected upon the ANZAC Day Ceremony. This is what they wrote:

April the 25th is Anzac Day and at Oatlands Primary School, we always have an Anzac Day Ceremony a few days later. This ceremony happens every year and it's so incredible. We all come together as one for the same reason and sing three national anthems. The choir is always so in sync and knows the lyrics off by heart. It's truly amazing singing with the choir every year. The ceremony, the music, the flags displayed out the front, it's all for the soldiers. So they know how grateful we are and how much we appreciate their service. It's very important we show we care and I love being part of it. Written by Shanai 5LK.

In April, the whole school held an Anzac Day Ceremony. I was in the audience watching the ceremony with my grade. The Grade 6 Leaders and Miss Jamieson were talking about the wars and the brave soldiers who fought for our country. There were special guests that came to the ceremony too. We had the chance to bring and lay flowers beneath the flags. We did a one minute of silence in the middle of the ceremony to remember the soldiers who fought for our country and after that the choir, audience, teachers and guests stood up to sing 3 national anthems. It was a very important day and I am grateful to have been part of it. Written by Madi 5LK.

HISTORICAL NARRATIVES

In our writing sessions this term, the students have been immersing themselves in historical narratives. They have been reading previously published historical narratives for inspiration and conducting their own research of significant historical events. Lotus charts have been a wonderful graphic tool that has allowed students to organise their research and practice writing information in their own words. Using the information gathered from their research, the students have been able to write their own historical narratives, giving incredible accounts of real-life experiences.

Saanvi from 5LK reflected upon her time writing her Historical Narrative. This is what she wrote:

This term in writing, we are learning about historical narratives. The great thing about this writing style is that you get to research about a specific topic from the past that interests you. I wrote a story about the Titanic and being the captain's daughter. I loved this writing style so much that I decided to write my own story at home. It was about Diana, Princess of Wales. I was Diana experiencing the big disaster. It has been great learning about historical narratives and I have enjoyed doing it in class. Written by Saanvi 5LK.

FRACTIONS & DECIMALS

During our Math sessions, our Grade 5 Mathematicians have been focusing on Fractions and Decimals. The students have been comparing and ordering fractions and decimals and placing them on number lines as well as adding and subtracting fractions. Delving into what fractions and decimals actually represent has assisted in the students being able to explore the relationship between them both. We asked some of our mathematicians in 5LH what their highlights have been this term. This is what they said:

Shanuk said: I enjoyed learning how to convert decimals to fractions, how to add fractions together and how to identify equivalent fractions.

Anna said: I loved the games about fractions that have taught me very much. My favourite part was ordering decimals and fractions from smallest to biggest with my class.

Medina said: I have enjoyed learning about fractions and decimals. I now understand how to use decimals. Fractions are fun to learn about and I think they are my favourite thing to learn about in Maths.

We can’t wait to see our mathematicians thrive in our next unit which is based on footy.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

Our Integrated Studies unit on Social Justice has been of great interest to our students. The students have been developing an understanding of what rights children around the world are entitled to while investigating the Convention on the rights of the child. Students have also identified where these rights are not being met around the world. This has given a greater appreciation for the privileged life most people enjoy in Australia. In addition, students have delved deeper into what actions people can take to make a difference to the lives of others in the global community.

ACTIVE APRIL

Active April has recently come to an end and what an amazing way it was to start our school day! The Grade 5 teachers absolutely loved getting out to the oval and seeing students’ hands full of marked laps every morning. We are very proud of the way the students set themselves personal goals to run a certain amount of laps during Active April. Congratulations must go to 5AM who was awarded with the title of ‘The Grade 5 Class With The Most Laps During Active April!’ Well done 5AM!

DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY

On Tuesday 9th of May, Mr Huggins accompanied some Grade 5 students to the District Cross Country. The training that the students had put in prior to the day had really set them up for success. They all achieved wonderful results and should be incredibly proud of their efforts and achievements. Mr Huggins only had positive things to say about them when he returned. He was very impressed with the students’ willpower and the team spirit he saw on the day. We have some students heading off to Division Cross Country to represent Oatlands Primary School. We wish them well for this next stage of their Cross Country journey.
