Q & A Student Reflections

Student Reflections from Q & A Audience Participation

‘Q and A’ time with Highvale

Jamie C, Christopher D, Sia K, Eros L, Andy L, Simone L, Swetha V, Alysa Y and Alyson Y, Ms Clarkson and Mr Miller.

On Wednesday evening Highvale Secondary College was invited to attend a special ‘Q and A’ High session hosted by BTN’s presenter Amelia Moseley. The student panel consisted of: Aud Mason-Hyde, (Actor, poet & activist ), Amarley Bron, (Biripi Worimi woman), Leo Puglisi (Founder of 6 News Australia), Will Shackel,(Founder of Nuclear for Australia) and Laura Strawbridge, (NSW Youth Parliament).

The key issues were: How are you feeling about the future? What’s going on in your classroom?

Our students had the opportunity to submit questions for the panel that reflected their interests and concerns. Alyson was lucky enough to be able to pose her question in studio, she asked:

“From Snapchat to Twitter to Instagram and TikTok, social media platforms are being misused to the point that they are toxic especially to younger generation. Do you think social media is ruining us and how can we prevent the destructive aspects of it on the future?”

Some reflections from the evening were:

“The panel inspired me to consider how to use my voice for the benefit of our world.” Sia

“I realised being open-minded means respecting and acknowledging other's opinions, even if they don't align with your own beliefs and values. “  Alysa

“The panellist’s advice to, ‘Just go for it’ when we support and pursue what we believe in, was powerful.” Andy

“Will Shackel's  staunch advocacy for nuclear power gave me new insights in the field.” Eros

“While I’m certain almost all of us were extremely keen on meeting our childhood favourite Amelia Moseley (on BTN), what I was most impressed with was how the panel were able to speak up for what they felt strongly about as well what they have been advocating for. Something I'm sure we all took away from this experience is that no matter your age, race, background, or ability to vote, any action that you undertake about an issue you feel strongly about can and will always contribute to how our society continues to flourish and develop.” Swetha

Everybody agreed that the evening was great fun!
