INSPIRING CURIOUS MINDS

Welcome back to school! What a start Term 3 has been!

We are so happy to have everyone back and see the sun shining. We have lots of exciting things happening in response to the Wellbeing and Inclusion survey sent last term. We have had some families communicate that they wondered if it has been just for parents of neurodivergent children and absolutely this is not the case! I will ensure to communicate this much more clearly for future surveys. I have met with the Wellbeing and Engagement subcommittee to share responses and make plans based on these. More to follow!

Firstly, I can happily confirm that Chrissie Davies from Chaos to Calm will be hosting a parent webinar on Tuesday August 22nd online 7:30pm – 8:30pm. Unfortunately the session is not able to be recorded. I will send links to sign up in a separate Compass post shortly so that families who don’t regularly check the newsletter don’t miss out! I apologise there appears to have been a sign up sheet that had gone out unintentionally for 12th July and some families had registered for a webinar that did not go ahead.

Chrissie will be running a workshop with staff next week and will echo this in her webinar, the goal being to ensure a shared message about affirmative behaviour responses and proactive prevention and developing an understanding of how to support our young people when they are dysregulated as well as to reduce the frequency of these moments. More to come soon!

Thank you all for a wonderful start. Enjoy the sunny afternoon!

FOR YOUR INFORMATION:

Flu vaccination for children and adolescents

Key messages

  • Influenza (flu) activity is continuing across Victoria, with almost half of cases occurring in children and adolescents under the age of 15 years.
  • Influenza A cases in Victoria are likely peaking, but influenza B cases which are more common in young children, are increasing.
  • Flu rates may increase, especially in children with return to school after the holidays.
  • In most children, flu causes mild to moderate illness with symptoms such as fever and cough.
  • Some children can develop severe illness, particularly babies and children with underlying medical conditions. Flu can increase the risk of rare invasive bacterial infections such as Group A streptococcal disease and meningococcal disease, so influenza vaccination can also help reduce this risk.
  • Vaccination is key to protecting children from severe flu and is recommended yearly for everyone aged 6 months and over.
  • It is never too late to vaccinate since the flu can circulate in the community all year round.
