SENIOR PE

We have had a busy and exciting Term 3 in Senior PE and Sport.  We started the term with Basketball in preparation for Hooptime.  We then had Jake from NRL Victoria come and teach us all about NRL and took us through some games and skills.  Later in the term we practised and built on our Hockey skills.  I think the most exciting activity we did this term was Wheelchair Basketball.  We had Basketball Victoria come and work with all classes in Years 3-6.  The program aims to raise awareness of the sport and the importance of inclusion and accessibility for people with a disability or impairment in sport and recreation activities whilst giving participants a real experience of Wheelchair Basketball. Some of the students were a bit nervous to try it, but after having a go they all really enjoyed it.  It was certainly a highlight for the term.  We finished the term learning about and practising our Newcombe and Volleyball skills.

Our AFL team competed in our District Playoffs back in July and made it through to Division, where they played some great football, but unfortunately lost the last game, which meant we didn’t get to progress through to the next level.  This team demonstrated teamwork, sportsmanship and some amazing skills and game play.  They should be really proud of how far they progressed, because Clyde Primary are certainly proud.

On 8th August, selected Year 5/6 students competed at the Casey Netball Tournament. This was a great opportunity to practise the skills we had learnt during class but also at Train Like a Vixen.  All the teams did really well and had some great wins.

Each year level had the opportunity to participate in our Swimming program at King Swim this term.  These lessons give students the opportunity to become familiar with water, build on their skills, learn safety around water and much more.

On 5th September selected students in Years 5/6 competed at Hooptime.  We had a fantastic day with lots of wins across the board.  Two teams made the finals and played some awesome basketball, but unfortunately it wasn’t our day.  On 12th September, selected students in Year 3/4 competed at Hooptime too.  Everyone had such a fun day and got better with each game they played.  Again lots of wins across the board!  We had one team reach the finals, but unfortunately they didn’t make it through to the final.  Maybe next year!

On Wednesday 13th September, we had 9 students compete at Division Athletics – Oscar, Zhara, Carter W, Nate, Sujay, Millah, Shania, Dom and Kael.  Well done to all of them for making it this far, such a great achievement.  Congratulations to Carter and Kael for making it though to Regionals from Division Athletics!

JUNIOR PE

This term in Junior PE we have been focusing on developing our fundamental motor skills through a range of sports.  Students have enjoyed participating in rotations focused on basketball, soccer, gymnastics and AFL.  They have been encouraged to have a ‘red hot go’ at developing their skills and learning the terminology associated with each sport. They have been using words such as dribbling, trapping, shooting, handballing, kicking, balancing, rolling and jumping.  It has been wonderful to see students develop their skills in these areas and also work on developing their sportsmanship, particularly during group games.

The term has ended on a high with our junior basketball shooting competition.  Students were given the opportunity to come and have a shot from the free throw line (with a lowered ring), receiving a prize and certificate if they got it in.  Congratulations to all students who had a ‘red hot go’ and especially to those who got their shot in!  Students were also able to try and see who had the longest kick in our AFL competition.  Well done to those students who gave it their best and to those who won the prize for the furthest kick for their team.  Looking forward to lots more fun in sport next term!

MUSIC

This term, students were so excited to focus on “Dance” in the performing arts curriculum.  In line with our school production coming up at the start of next term, Foundation to Year 5 students learned their routine for the Interlude Dance, based on the theme song “Cloudy Day” during their music lessons.  The interlude dance is placed between the scenes in the production and students who are in the same scene from different grades will combine and perform the dance together.  We have just started combining grades and practicing the interlude dance and will continue to do so in the first few weeks of next term leading to the production.  Year 6 students were given the opportunity to create a short part of a dance routine to the tune of Cloudy Day” music. Year 5 and 6 students also completed research on a music band they like and presented to their class peers.  As part of Book week celebrations, Foundation to Year 4 students created “stories” to narrate using musical instruments and body percussion.

SENIOR STEM

This term students have been excited to participate in STEM.  In years 3-6, we have learned about the design process and followed the steps of investigate, generate, produce, and evaluate, to collaboratively plan and create our own designs.  Students in year 3 and 4 investigated the need for safe nesting places for many different animals and have created a nesting box for their chosen species.  Students in year 5 and 6 were challenged to create a food container to safely transport cupcakes, or to create a book stand to hold books of all sizes open on a given page.  All classes developed their problem solving and group work skills.

JUNIOR STEM

This Term, in Junior STEM we have been focusing on Design Technologies and learning to use the design process.  We have been learning about different materials and how these materials are used to build shelters that cater for different needs.   We used the design process and our new knowledge about materials to design and build animal shelters that cater for our animal’s needs.

This term the Foundation students explored colourful, quirky art by artists Misaki Kawai and Laurel Burch.  It was a wonderful adventure in creating texture, exploring colours, making patterns and creating BIG artworks.
