Fed Uni HEP

We weren’t sure what to expect when we ventured to Federation University to attend the History Enrichment Program, however we thoroughly enjoyed it. We got to look at many historical artifacts and put our deductive reasoning to the test trying to figure out the purpose of these artifacts. Some of these artifacts were from Ancient Rome – it was cool to be able to examine these in our own hands and not look at them from behind a glass cabinet as would be the case in a museum.

We also thoroughly enjoyed learning about the Plague in a hands-on more interactive way than is possible in class – we got to see and smell the actual remedies that people used to try and cure it during the Medieval period. It was interesting to see the plague doctor outfit - which is meant to look scary to ward off evil spirits! It was particularly interesting to learn that the Plague actually came to Melbourne in the early 1900s. We got to compare the different treatments they used on the brink of the age of modern medicine and the medieval period.

We also get the opportunity to the to take part in a passion project – in which we can research our favourite period/event in history. This freedom was very exciting and we started brainstorming ideas immediately. We are all looking forward to going back to Federation University to present our passion projects in October.
