Year 9 Physical Education Electives

It's not just about the players

You like the idea of being like Ray Chamberlain and controlling the game with a whistle or be the best coach in your particular sport just like Craig Bellamy in Rugby League, then this is the subject for you. In this subject, students will look at:

  • The different occupations in professional sports these days
  • How to successfully coach and umpire games
  • Look at how to run a successful sporting event
  • Be able to provide basic first aid

Beat the floorboards

Prefer indoor sports? Like to play both individual and team games? Beat the floorboards is for you. Learn to hit cross court shots like Roger Federer, shoot like Kevin Durant or pass like Madi Robinson. Lots of variety and lots of skills that cross over to other games, this unit will give students to be involved. In this subject, students will:

  • Participate in tennis, badminton, basketball, netball and volleyball
  • Look at an understand shot selection and court positioning in tennis and badminton
  • Run modified tournaments in class
  • Understand and implement tactics when playing team sports

Fitness for Life

Not into competitive sports? Would like to be fit so you can live a healthy life? Following on from Fitness for Fun in Year 8, this subject will allow the student to continue on the journey of general health and well being through individual :

  • Undertake a variety of fitness activities to see what students like
  • Create individual fitness plans that suit the students needs
  • Be involved in non competitive sports and minor games which focus on sport for fun
  • Understand the need to maintain a healthy lifestyle throughout your life

Social Sport

Are all sports competitive? Do some take less physical exertion than others or are just done for fun, not for a result? If you aren’t into competition then this subject is for you. It will still take skill, but will be more fun for you if you don’t need a scoreboard. This class will see students:

  • Undertake recreational sports like ten pin bowling and golf
  • Try non traditional fitness activities at places like bounce and latitude
  • Score if you want by playing table tennis against a friend

NB. There will be a cost associated with this subject to undertake outside school activities

 

That’s the thing about football

This unit focuses on footy codes. Relying on your teammates, this subject will require everyone in the class to be involved. All the great teams in the world have common traits, from the All Blacks in New Zealand to the 3 time premiership winning Hawks, the ability to work together and be a collective are the skills that are learnt. In this subject, students will:

  • Participate in soccer, AFL, touch rugby, modified NFL
  • Look at common characteristics of successful teams
  • Develop strategies that can be used in each sport
  • Looking at strategies from one football code and seeing if they can be successful in other games

Climbing Everest

For as long as man has been on this planet, they have wanted to conquer the environment. From Sir Edmund Hillary to Bear Grylls, it has been a matter of humans against the elements. In this subject we will look at:

  • What motivates and influences people to undertake outdoor experiences
  • What are the different environments and weather conditions that effect how humans can survive in the outdoors
  • What impacts do humans have on the world

The focus of this unit is to give students introductory material to what will follow if students undertake VCE Outdoor Education classes in Year 10, 11 and 12.
