Following my high school dream

In a way I have followed my high school  dream. I was not really sure what my dream was when I left high school, but I enjoyed science, so decided to study science at university. I still enjoy science and the interesting challenges that a career as a scientist brings.

What I am doing now and how I got here

I am working as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow with NICM  (The National Institute of Complementary Medicine) Health Research Institute. I studied Advanced Science at Western Sydney University after graduating from Cecil Hills High School. I then completed my PhD at Western Sydney University,  studying the anti-inflammatory properties of an herb called Andropraghis paniculata.

Now I work at Western Sydney Univesity, doing similar research on natural products. My major areas of research are improving how our bodies absorb natural products and discovering what natural products work synergistically together and why.

Some of my achievements

The best achievement in my life so far is definitely my family. I have a beautiful wife and three lovely children. They love it when I bring my work home and we do some fun experiments, but they are not so happy when the work I bring home involves me having to spend time reading and writing!

My special memories from school

I have many fond memories of my school days -  the camps we went on in Health Science, the snow trip and the camping trip.

I still remember Mr Ibrahim’s commando roll to turn the gas off when the gas tap caught alight, causing a flame thrower across the bench.   I also remember quickly tucking my shirt in whenever I saw the then deputy principal, Ms Petersen in the playground.   Not to forget Mr Brame pulling apart old TV’s and other electrical items to show us how they work!  I remember the chicken burgers at the school canteen - I hope they are still the best around.

Let me take this opportunity to wish you all the very best as you pursue your chosen career and life path - never forget the wonderful days you spend at school -  and remember to  enjoy your life journey.
