Foundation News

Congratulations to the students in Foundation LW for the many “firsts” that have occurred over the past week. The firsts have included: attending full days of school, (Wednesdays are still rest days for two more weeks) first whole school assembly, first art lesson with Mr Frazzetto, first whole school Mass and completing their first star chart.

They have a fantastic knowledge of the St Fidelis agreed ways and they are to be congratulated for the way they are trying to follow them both in the classroom and out in the playground.

Today is Day 10 as we count towards 100 Days of School.

In Week 6 beginning March 2nd, the Foundation students will attend school every day. Each Wednesday they will participate in a Physical Education lesson with Mr Jennings so each Wednesday they will be able to wear their sport uniform. Also, each Wednesday, they will have an Italian lesson with Signora Caruana.

Keep up the great learning Foundation LW, your teacher is very proud of you all!

Year 1/2 News

What a wonderful start to the learning year.  The students have been very good at remembering our classroom agreed ways and routines.  They are playing in the yards very nicely and including many children in their games.

In the classroom the students are revisiting the routines of 'Read to Self' and 'Read to Someone' in literacy.

In Numeracy, they are focussing on representing numbers in different ways.

In Religion, the students are writing personal prayers for the classroom prayer table.  We have commenced our Social and Emotional Learning program - You Can Do It. We have been discussing what success looks like in our classrooms and in our daily lives.  Students have been writing their successes and placing them on our 1/2 Success Tree.

Year 3/4 News

Intra school sports - Year 3/4 - Newcombe
Intra school sports - Year 3/4 - Newcombe

The Year 3/4 classes have been spending time enjoying getting to know their new classmates and settling into their new grade over the past few weeks. We have focussed on discussing class expectations and setting protocols to ensure a happy and thriving learning environment is set up for the year ahead.

In Literacy, the students have been revisiting the qualities needed to be a good reader and writer and have discussed the expectations for when they are reading independently and to others.  We have also begun to implement our Writer’s Notebooks and to plant seeds or ideas for independent writing.

In Maths, we have focused on Data and Graphing. Students are posing questions and thinking about what type of information they would like to collect. We will be creating bar graphs, pie charts, pictographs and tables to represent data collected. Students will analyse data collected and reflect on their findings.

In Inquiry, the students have been wondering about the devastating bushfires and are investigating how we can respond to this crisis as a school community. We are ready to start our new inquiry topic on making decisions which will continue for the rest of the term.

Last Wednesday, we had our Parent Teacher Conversations and found it to be a wonderful opportunity to meet with families. Building positive connections between home and school can have a beneficial impact on our students and we are all keen to help make sure that school is a happy experience for everyone. It was so great to see many of the year 3/4 parents and families and we thank you for attending.

Year 5/6 News

The Year 5/6 students have continued their excellent start to this school year. The reverence displayed at both out first level and whole school Mass is a credit to each of them.

Last week each student participated in the provocation activity for our Inquiry unit: Who’s Got the Power. Students were challenged with the concepts of power, missing out and disappointment when only 24 of the 84 were selected to receive an icy pole from four of our school leaders. Each grade then discussed how this situation made them feel, how the leaders may have felt having to have made the decision and how it could have been made fairer. The students handled this with maturity which was pleasing to witness.

Inter school sport started last week with all teams winning their matches. The pleasing feedback from both teachers and students was that everybody participated with enthusiasm and the support showed to one another was fantastic.

Just a reminder that Year 5/6 Parent 'Getting to know you' Morning Tea is on this Wednesday Feb 19th at  9am in the staffroom and on Tuesday, February 25th school photos will take place. We encourage all Year 6 students to attend the Year 6/Foundation Buddy Mass on Sunday, March 1st at 11am.

We congratulate the Grade 5/6 students on their efforts and look forward to another fortnight of learning.
